A new era for Hawke’s Bay boat building specialists
Summer marks the start of a new era for Hawke’s Bay boat building company, Senator.
The company has taken full control of sales nationwide and is set to build on its longstanding reputation for creating quality crafts.
Senator Boats was established by Wayne McKinley, an avid fisherman who built his first boat for a friend almost three decades ago.
Wayne now employs a team of 13 boat builders in his Napier factory and has a network of seven dealers selling Senator boats throughout New Zealand.
Senator’s new national sales manager Murray Thomson says part of the company’s planned growth involves the company working directly with its dealers nationwide.
“This means we are now supplying boats directly to our dealers from the factory, and supporting their sales and marketing activities,” says Murray.
“Working directly with our dealers ensures our high standards are maintained.”
Murray says the move to take full control of the business means Senator is “master of its own destiny” moving forward.
The inaugural Senator Dealer Conference held in September helped set the scene for many exciting future initiatives, including the upcoming launch of a new range next year.
The Senator Typhoon range of alloy plate boats will complement the company’s well respected and proven pontoon and offshore models. The range will feature alloy plate boats from 5.5 metres to 6.5 metres in cuddy style, along with 6.7 metres to 9.2 metres hard top crafts.
Murray Thomson says Senator will continue to build its quality pontoon and offshore boats, with the Typhoon series providing even more choice for boat lovers nationwide.
“We love building boats – and we know we create great boats customised to specific customer needs – so the Senator Typhoon range adds another option for boaties who love the quality and reliability of Senator.”

The 35-strong squad includes seven new caps: Tasman loosehead prop Ben Franks and Southland prop and captain Jamie Mackintosh in the front row; loose forwards Scott Waldrom from Taranaki, Canterbury Air New Zealand Cup captain Kieran Read and Waikato captain Liam Messam; and Wellington team-mates, winger Hosea Gear and fullback Cory Jane.
Players returning to the All Blacks after injury include Taranaki lock Jason Eaton and Auckland winger Josevata Rokocoko, while other notable recalls include Canterbury’s Corey Flynn, an All Black in 2003 – 2004, and Wellington lock Ross Filipo, who last played for the All Blacks in June 2007.
Canterbury’s Leon MacDonald and Waikato’s Brendon Leonard were not considered for selection, due to injury.
“We feel we have got the right balance with a nucleus of experienced All Blacks as well as seven new caps, who have shown their class in the Rebel Sport Super 14 and the Air New Zealand Cup, for what will be the most demanding Test match tour schedule faced by an All Blacks team in the professional era.”

Living legend Sanath Jayasuriya will showcase his devastating batting skills at next month’s Hong Kong Cricket Sixes.
The Sri Lankan ace – one of the most lethal hitters in the game – has been confirmed for the showpiece at the Kowloon Cricket Club on 8-9 November.
He will join an awesome All-Stars team that already contains test greats Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming and Matthew Hoggard.
“I'm delighted to be playing in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes and I'm looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic weekend at the Kowloon Cricket Club,” said Jayasuriya.
“It will be great to team up with guys like Shiv, Justin, Stephen and Matthew, who have been my friends and respected opponents for many years in test and one day cricket, and hopefully we can put on a fantastic show for the fans.”
Jayasuriya, 39, is one of the true greats of the modern game, having racked up an astonishing 27 hundreds and 66 fifties in 421 one day internationals (ODIs).
Yet the left-hander has also enjoyed a stellar test career, scoring 14 hundreds and 31 fifties in 110 matches.
In addition, he is an extremely effective spin bowler with 310 ODI wickets and 98 test wickets to his name.
Jayasuriya revolutionised ODI batting with his aggressive tactics at the 1996 World Cup, taking advantage of fielding restrictions early in the innings by smashing the opening bowlers to all parts of the ground.

The Hong Kong Cricket Sixes is fully sanctioned by the ICC and is the sport's longest-running, best-established and most high-profile sixes tournament.
Players who have taken part over the past 16 years include Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve and Mark Waugh, Viv Richards, Andrew Flintoff, Adam Gilchrist and Wasim Akram.
