US SAILING's 2009 Rolex Miami OCR NOR

US SAILING's 2009 Rolex Miami OCR
Notice of Race Available Online

Miami, Fla. (October 30, 2008) – US SAILING’s Rolex Miami OCR is preparing for its 2009 debut as the second stop on the inaugural International Sailing Federation’s (ISAF) Sailing World Cup 2008-2009 circuit. Already a long-time ISAF Grade 1 world ranking event as well as a US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics qualifier and preferred winter training regatta for the world’s elite Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls, the Rolex Miami OCR also will celebrate its 20th Anniversary when it returns to Coconut Grove, Fla., from January 25-31, 2009. The Notice of Race is now available online at the newly-launched event web site, www.RolexMiamiOCR.org.

US SAILING’s Rolex Miami OCR is open to the events chosen for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competitions. The equipment used for each event will be chosen at the 2008 ISAF Annual Conference in Madrid, Spain from November 6-16, 2008. Starting December 1, 2008, competitors and coaches will be required to register online for the Rolex Miami OCR. The deadline for registration is January 19, 2009, and on-site registration will not be available.

Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), who won an Olympic Gold Medal in the Laser Radial class, a silver medal at last year’s 2008 Rolex Miami OCR and is currently ranked number one in the ISAF World Rankings, is excited to return to Miami to compete in this competitive event. “I’m looking forward to getting back in the boat,” said Tunnicliffe, after a September victory in Sonars at US SAILING’s U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship, followed by a second-place finish at the Snipe Women’s Worlds. “I haven’t been in the Laser Radial since the Olympics.”

While the Rolex Miami OCR has typically seen some downturn in participation after an Olympic/Paralympic year, Tunnicliffe believes 2009 will show an impressive turnout. “This (ISAF circuit) is a good incentive to get people to continue on (with their Olympic and Paralympic campaigns) straight away,” she said, adding that the World Cup schedule would be the foundation for her regatta training as she pursues a repeat berth at the 2012 Olympics.

The ISAF Sailing World Cup 2008-2009 consists of the following events:

16-21 Dec 2008 - Sail Melbourne Regatta, Melbourne, Australia
25-31 Jan 2009 - Rolex Miami OCR, Miami, USA
04-10 April 2009 - Trofeo SAR Princess Sofia MAPFRE, Palma, Spain
18-24 April 2009 - Semaine Olympique Francaise, Hyeres, France
27-31 May 2009 - Delta Lloyd Regatta, Medemblik, Netherlands
21-29 June 2009 - Kieler Woche, Kiel, Germany
14-19 Sept 2009 - Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, Weymouth, Great Britain

In line with ISAF’s philosophy for the World Cup, the Rolex Miami OCR strives to create the best competition for Olympic and Paralympic sailors, with reviews of the event each year to ensure it exceeds the expectations of all who participate.

“We are excited to be a part of the World Cup,” said US SAILING Olympic Director Katie Kelly. “And with our long-time support from Rolex and other US SAILING sponsors, we know that we can bring something special to ISAF’s plate as well.” (Rolex is a partner of ISAF as well.)

About the Rolex Miami OCR
Established in 1990 by US SAILING, the Rolex Miami OCR annually draws elite sailors, including Olympic and Paralympic medalists and hopefuls from around the world. In non-Olympic/Paralympic years, the regatta is especially important as a ranking regatta for sailors hoping to qualify for the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics, which annually distinguishes the top three sailors in each Olympic and Paralympic class. The 2009 Rolex Miami OCR consists of five days of fleet racing from Monday, January 26 through Friday, January 30, and one day of top-ten medal racing (for Olympic classes only) on Saturday, January 31. For complete and up-to-the-minute regatta information and resources, including the Notice of Race, entry list, online registration, schedule, hosts and area information, please visit: www.RolexMiamiOCR.org

Hosting proposals received for RWC 2011 Pool Matches and Team Bases

Regional groups representing 18 different regions across New Zealand have lodged proposals to host Pool Matches or visiting teams during Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011.

Rugby New Zealand (RNZ) 2011 Ltd CEO Martin Snedden said the lodging of hosting proposals for the 40 Pool Matches and for Team Bases during the Tournament was an exciting step for all of the regions which have been involved in the match and team allocation process.

“We have been working closely with regions throughout New Zealand and, practically without exception, every part of the country has been exploring how they can be a part of Rugby World Cup 2011.

“The response has been exceptional and demonstrates how much New Zealand regions want to be involved in this once in a lifetime opportunity. It provides the country with the perfect platform to deliver on our collective vision of a Stadium of Four Million.”

Of the 18 regional proposals, 11 have applied to host pool matches, comprising 16 separate match venues, while seven regions have applied to host teams only.

In addition to the 40 pool matches, this process also includes proposals to create team bases for the 20 teams either in the lead-up to the Tournament or between matches.

The regions which applied to host Pool Matches are: Northland, Auckland, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu, Wellington, Nelson Tasman Region, Christchurch and the Southern Region (Otago/Southland). Auckland and the Southern Region’s proposals contain three venues while the Bay of Plenty’s proposal includes two venues.

All of these regions have also included applications to host teams as part of their proposals.

Those regions which have applied to host teams only are: Marlborough, Tairawhiti (Poverty Bay/East Coast), Taupo, Aoraki Region (Timaru), Ashburton, West Coast, and Wanganui.

“This has been a major undertaking for all concerned so we are extremely grateful for all the work that the participating regions, cities and towns have done to get the process to this stage.

“Based on an initial look at the proposals, they are of exceptionally high quality and reflect the unity, passion and support of the participating regional groups.

“The cooperation within regional communities has been unprecedented. Local authorities, tourism and regional business organisations as well as provincial rugby unions and major sporting facilities in each region deserve to be congratulated for the level of coordination,” said Mr Snedden

A link with Rugby World Cup history
Among those present in Wellington today for the presentation of the Bay of Plenty regional hosting proposal was former NZRU Councillor and former BOP Rugby Union Chairman, Dick Littlejohn, who was one of the key people in conceiving and delivering the first Rugby World Cup in 1987. Mr Littlejohn joined a delegation of civic and Bay of Plenty iwi representatives who travelled to Wellington to deliver the proposal.

Mr Snedden said the presence of Mr Littlejohn at the RNZ 2011 offices represented a wonderful link with New Zealand’s role in founding Rugby World Cup and hosting, so successfully, the very first Tournament.

Evaluation Criteria
When evaluating the various proposals and the match and team base allocations, RNZ 2011 will assess these using a set of criteria aligned to RNZ 2011’s four key strategic goals, these being:

1. Delivering an operationally excellent tournament
2. Achieving capacity crowds and achieving the budgeted financial result or better
3. Inspiring a nationwide Rugby World Cup festival
4. Creating enduring benefits.

Pool and team allocations
Rugby World Cup Limited will announce the make-up of the four pools for RWC 2011 following the Pool Allocation Draw which will take place in the giant New Zealand Ball in London on December 1. The draw will be based on the rankings of the 12 pre-qualified teams as at November 30 and will allocate all of the teams and the qualification places to pools.

Decisions on match venues as well as the match schedule are expected to be announced in March or April 2009 following a recommendation by the Board of RNZ 2011 to Rugby World Cup Limited. Team bases will be announced in late 2009.

10 days to go for Sam Davies aboard Roxy - two time Vendée Globe winner

British female sailor Sam Davies is ready to take on the 2008 Vendée Globe following a summer refit for her IMOCA Open 60 racing yacht ‘Roxy’. After a valiant fifth place in the 2008 Artemis Transat in May, the highest placed Briton in the fleet, Sam and Roxy are now focused on completing the 45,000 kilometre race around the globe, referred to as the sailor’s Everest. Although this is Sam’s first Vendée Globe, Roxy has a rich heritage in the race – she is ex-PRB, winner of the past two races and current holder of the Vendée Globe record of 87 days 10 hours and 47 minutes.

Sam has been preparing for the 2008 Vendée Globe for almost two years. Since being named skipper of Roxy at the end of 2006, Sam and her Open 60 have successfully completed a draft of gruelling ocean races designed to give Sam invaluable experience ahead of her departure on 9th November. At home in Brittany in the final weeks before the race, Sam commented: “I’m just unbelievably excited that the race is finally here. My shore crew and I have been working towards the Vendée for a long time, so to see all the boats together in the race village in Les Sables d’Olonne, ready to go, is amazing. There is a nice relaxed atmosphere in the race village amongst the skippers too, even as race day approaches and the pressure mounts.”

Over the summer, Roxy has undergone a refit to ensure she is one of the most competitive in the field despite the number of newer boats in the fleet. The fine-tuning of Roxy will ensure she is ready to perform to her full potential during the race, which is sure to stretch her to the extreme. Talking about her pink boat, Sam commented: “The summer refit was actually more of a check-up as Roxy was pretty much ready before the Artemis Transat. We replaced all the lashings on the boat and spent time anti-fouling the hull, but apart from that we were really happy with her condition – it was probably the most relaxing period in the whole Vendée build-up!”

Sam has also been completing training of her own in the months leading up to the race: “I have been doing a lot of weather courses to try and pick up more knowledge about the typical conditions I’ll be encountering during the race. I’ve been practising with archive data and getting to know the latest technology and software I’ll be using on Roxy. At one point I even sailed around the world in a day on a virtual weather simulator. September was spent completing more sail training alongside the best of the French Vendée skippers, running the boat in, that kind of thing.”

On the whole, Sam is remarkably relaxed about the huge undertaking she is about to begin: “We have prepared so well for the race that I am not too worried about the boat. I just hope that we have no major breakages that are out of my control. The part I’m least looking forward to is the start, as everyone will be there to see me and I don’t want to let them down by making a mistake. As for the race itself, my only objective at the moment is to finish.”

Sam Davies and facts about the Vendée Globe
- Sailors will cover approximately 24,500 kilometres of water in a race around the globe starting and finishing in Les Sables d’Olonne, France

- Over 1 million spectators are expected to pass through the race village in the next 10 days

- The Vendée Globe is considered by many as the world’s toughest sporting event

- The sailor’s Everest: only 44 people have ever completed the race, compared with over 1000 who have climbed Everest

- 30 boats, including 2 women, 7 British skippers make up the largest fleet in the history of the race

VAAS AND HENDERSON COMPLETE ALL-STARS SQUAD

Fast bowling great Chaminda Vaas and Twenty20 king Tyron Henderson will round out a talent-packed All-Stars team at next week’s Hong Kong Cricket Sixes.

The duo are the final two additions to a line-up that already contains Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies), Justin Langer (Australia), Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka), Matthew Hoggard (England) and Stephen Fleming (New Zealand).

The All-Stars will join six test-playing nations and hosts Hong Kong in the showpiece tournament at the Kowloon Cricket Club on 8-9 November.

Vaas, 34, ranks as Sri Lanka’s best ever pace bowler with 348 wickets in 107 test appearances. In addition, the left-armer has taken 400 wickets in 322 one day internationals.

He is also a dangerous lower-order batsman with a test century and 13 fifties to his name.

“I'm delighted and honoured to be invited to play for the All-Stars this year,” said Vaas.

“Of course, I've played with Sanath many times before and we'll enjoy teaming up again, but the rest of the guys have been respected opponents for many years so it will be awesome to be in the same team as them for this tournament.

“We've got a very strong side, but we also know all the other teams will be trying extra hard to beat us.

“The Sixes has a great reputation for fun and entertainment and we'll be doing our best to give the fans at the Kowloon Cricket Club something to cheer.”

South African allrounder Henderson starred with both bat and ball for Middlesex this year as they won the English Twenty20 Cup.

He played some savage innings – blasting 59 from 21 balls against Durham in the semi-finals and belting 43 from 33 balls in the final victory over Kent – while also cementing his status as the all-time leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 cricket worldwide.

Henderson was a member of the South Africa team that won the Sixes in 2006.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing at the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes and it will be great to be involved again,” he said. “It’s an exciting tournament for players and fans alike and the atmosphere at the Kowloon Cricket Club is just brilliant.”

The All-Stars have been drawn in the Sobers Group alongside Sri Lanka, Australia and hosts Hong Kong.

“We’ve got a great chance to win the tournament, but we know we’re in for three tough pool games,” added Henderson.

“Sri Lanka are the defending champions, Australia are always ultra-competitive and Hong Kong have scored some upsets down the years, so we’ll be on our guard. It promises to be a fun but also testing weekend.”

Tournament director Mark Burns was delighted to welcome Vaas and Henderson to the All-Stars.

“It’s a world class squad and one which every cricket fan in Hong Kong will want to see in action,” said Burns.

“The batting line-up of Chanderpaul, Langer, Jayasuriya and Fleming is awesome, Hoggard and Vaas are a fantastic opening bowling attack and Henderson is the top allrounder in Twenty20.

“I think their biggest problem is going to be deciding who to leave on the bench for each game!”

In the other half of the draw, arch-rivals India and Pakistan will meet in the Bradman group together with England and South Africa.

CHAMPIONS GALORE AT 50TH UBS HONG KONG OPEN

An illustrious quartet of past champions – headed by two-time winner Miguel Angel Jiménez – will contest the historic 50th edition of the UBS Hong Kong Open.

Jiménez, champion in 2004 and again last year, will line up with 2005 winner Colin Montgomerie, 2001 victor José María Olazábal and the legendary Bernhard Langer, who captured the title in 1991.

The four will be joined in the US$2.5 million showpiece by six-time Major winner Nick Faldo.

The UBS Hong Kong Open will be held at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling from November 20-23.

Spanish star Jiménez is aiming to become only the third player in history to claim a hat-trick of Hong Kong titles.

Taiwanese legend Hsieh Yung Yo has four wins (1963-64, 1975 and 1978) while Australian great Peter Thomson has three victories to his name (1960, 1965 and 1967).

Jiménez will also be attempting to be the first player since Hsieh to successfully defend his title.

“The Hong Kong Golf Club is one of my favourite courses in the world and the UBS Hong Kong Open is one of my favourite tournaments,” said Jiménez.

“When you look at the list of great former champions then you realise just how historic and important it is. The 50th edition of the tournament will be even more special and I’m really going to enjoy being part of it as I defend my title.”

The cigar-chomping, pony-tailed Jiménez triumphed in dramatic fashion last year, making up four shots on overnight leader Robert Karlsson of Sweden to win by a single stroke.

He had the same margin of victory in 2004 when he pipped Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and South African James Kingston.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to win the UBS Hong Kong Open twice and I would love to complete a hat-trick, especially in such an important year,” added Jiménez.

“But I know UBS are putting together a tremendous field and it is going to be extremely tough.

“I’m especially pleased that Bernhard, José María and Monty, three fantastic Hong Kong champions, and Nick, who has been such an inspiration to European golfers, will be alongside me this year.

“I count them all as good friends and we’re looking forward to what promises to be a great week at Fanling.”

Scottish great Montgomerie won by a stroke three years ago when the unfortunate Kingston double bogeyed the final hole.

Two-time Masters champion Olazábal, meanwhile, produced what is widely regarded as the greatest finish in the Hong Kong tournament’s history when he won in 2001.

Trailing co-leaders Henrik Bjornstad and Adam Scott by two shots with three holes to play, the Spaniard finished with three birdies in a row – highlighted by a brilliant approach shot to within inches of the pin on the 18th – to win by one shot.

Langer, in contrast, was a runaway winner 17 years ago when he fired an eight-under-par 63 in the final round.

“I have very fond memories of Hong Kong as a winner there many years ago,” said the German star, the Masters champion in 1985 and 1993.

“The UBS Hong Kong Open is one of the great tournaments of Asia and Hong Kong is one of the most unique locations on tour.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Hong Kong for the Open, which is celebrating its 50th edition, a great achievement.”

Faldo, meanwhile, will be a star attraction both on and off the course at next month’s showpiece.

The English great – winner of the British Open in 1987, 1990 and 1992 and the Masters in 1989, 1990 and 1996 – will once again take on an “ambassadorial” role as a special guest of title sponsor UBS.

Faldo has fond memories of Fanling, having shot a third-round 62 – a course record at the time – on his way to winning the inaugural Johnnie Walker Classic in 1990.

The UBS Hong Kong Open – first staged in 1959 – is the oldest professional sports event in Hong Kong and is considered the “jewel in the crown” of Asian golf with a history that no other tournament in the region can match.

“The UBS Hong Kong Open is one of the marquee events in the Asian golfing calendar and acknowledged as the heritage tournament in the region,” said Chi-Won Yoon, Country Head and CEO, UBS AG Hong Kong Branch.

“In its 50th year we are delighted to invite two eminent past champions, Bernhard Langer and José Maria Olazábal, back to Fanling. As two of the nine players who have won both the Open and a Major championship, they are emblematic of the tournament’s distinguished history.

“I am delighted that they will be joined by two of their elite contemporaries, 2005 winner Colin Montgomerie and Nick Faldo, long-time favourites in Hong Kong, as well as by the UBS Hong Kong Open’s defending champion, Miguel Angel Jiménez.”

SANZAR FINALISES 2009 LAWS, FORMATS

SANZAR postponed an expansion of the Super Rugby finals series until 2010 during a teleconference on Tuesday.

The decision came after partners were unable to agree on a format for the planned six-team playoffs.

SANZAR officials also confirmed the 2009 Super 14 and Tri Nations series would continue to trial sanctions as part of the ELVs package for both tournaments.

This move is in accordance with the IRB's approval in May for SANZAR to extend the experimentation process and allow the use of extra ELVs in addition to the 13 that have been on global trial since August 1 this year.

"These were major issues with major implications in the different markets and we could not reach a consensus on either issue," said Andy Marinos, the acting managing director of SA Rugby, who doubles as the SANZAR MD on a rotational basis.

"We would all like to have gone to a six-team play-off series in 2009 and accepted that principle at our July meeting in Perth, but we could not agree on the play-off structure that was to be adopted and, in the interests of SANZAR, we opted to remain with the status quo."

Marinos also said the SANZAR partners were unable to agree a common approach on the ELVs and opted for the status quo.

"SANZAR was given IRB approval in May to further trial an expanded form of the ELVs and after reflection we have re-committed to that principle as an organisation," said Marinos.

"The ELVs as applied in the Tri-Nations will continue into the 2009 SANZAR competitions - we're smart enough and professional enough as rugby nations to adapt when we have to."

The Super 14 will kick-off on the weekend of February 13/14 .and the fixtures for the 2009 season will be issued in due course.

Five All Blacks extend NZRU contracts

All Blacks Josevata Rokocoko, Conrad Smith, Anthony Tuitavake, John Afoa and Ma’a Nonu have extended their contracts with the New Zealand Rugby Union, it was announced today.

Rokocoko, Smith and Tuitavake have re-signed through to the end of 2010 while

Afoa and Nonu have re-signed through to 2011.

NZRU General Manager Professional Rugby Neil Sorensen said the signings were great news for New Zealand rugby.

“To have this group of experienced and talented guys in their prime and wanting to contribute further to New Zealand rugby is fantastic.

“They will no doubt help their teams’ chances of success and will also have a positive side-effect on those playing alongside them. We appreciate their commitment.”

24-year-old Afoa made his All Blacks Test debut at prop in 2005 and has played nine Tests, including six so far in 2008. He has also donned the Auckland jersey 60 times since 2002 and has also played 60 matches for the Blues.

26-year-old Nonu has scored eight tries in his 28 All Blacks Tests. He made his debut in 2003 and has played in 10 Tests so far this year. The midfielder has also been capped more than 70 times for the Hurricanes and played his 58th game for Wellington last weekend.

Rokocoko has played 48 Tests for the All Blacks in a career that has so far spanned five years. The 25-year-old winger made his debut a week after his 20th birthday alongside Nonu in 2003 and has scored 43 tries in the black jersey. Rokocoko has also played 60 games for the Blues and 20 games for Auckland.

Thailand International Cricket Sixes Tournament Final Day Report

Sunday saw the conclusion to the inaugural Thailand International Cricket Sixes, and what a dramatic day it was. The scriptwriters could not have made up a better ending for the organisers, the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour in conjunction with Southerners CC of Bangkok.

Teams returned from a well-deserved rest at The Chaophya Park Hotel to a damp Harrow International School ground to complete the preliminary games.

Saturday’s late games saw Shanghai Dragons post 1/110 (Jon Newton 31*) against Bounty Buccaneers 2/26. Richard Oster recorded his second retirement of the day for Southerners Gold who ended up with 0-87 against Jakarta Rebels 2/46. CBB SC’s scored 2/81 with Saurav Chattergee starring with 30* opposed to Southerners Black’s 52 to bring proceedings to an end for the day.

On Sunday morning CBB Postels could only muster 2/33 against Southerners Gold who knocked off the target without loss. CBB SK’s (3/20) didn’t fair any better chasing Shanghai’s 0/83 for whom Jon Newton hammered another undefeated innings. CBB SC’s 0/72 consisted of a fine Mark Woods knock while the Bounty Buccs could only reply with 4/26.

Etihad Airways made hard work of chasing down the CBB Postels 1/44, finally reaching their target with two balls to spare. Jakarta only just overcame the Rough Edged Gents before a real nail biter, and indeed shock ended the prelims. When Southerners Black reached 5/53, it appeared to be game over against winless CBB SK’s. However, how wrong could the aficionados be? Cathy Gavin had taken a wicket before her husband Carl, smashed a retirement. It was then left to CBB stalwart, Swiss Cyrus Maybud to hit the winning runs with a ball to spare.

The semi finals of the Plate saw CBB SK’s 1/44 fell well short of Jakarta’s 1/65 while CBB Postels 2/43 was never going to be enough to trouble Southerners Black.

The Cup semi’s produced cricket of the highest quality. Southerners Gold’s 2/66 looked as though it was going to be too many for CBB SC’s until one superb over of hitting from old stager Ian Liddell turned the tide. The winning runs were scored from the last ball. Shanghai’s 0/68 consisted of another great knock from Sanjay Anagula against Etihad and it looked like it was going to be enough. However, amazing knocks from Sanket Nayak and Azam Qazi saw the Abu Dhabi based outfit home with a ball to spare.

The Bowl Final saw the Rough Edged Gents defeat the Bounty Buccaneers by 22 runs to lift silverware at the first attempt. Lee Keohane contributed 21 but Stuart Tasker took the man of the match award with 31*.

Southerners Black lifted the Plate title chasing down the spirited Rebels target of 4/49 with just 2 balls remaining. Jakarta were severely hampered by a bad injury to Robbie Whiteman who battled on to the end. The hosts Jay Lamey took the man of the match accolades for his 31 not out.

The best was yet to come as the Cup Final was a brilliant advert for the tournament and sixes cricket. In a vibrant atmosphere CBB SC’s 2/70 (made up of some monster hits from Saurav Chattergee and Imran Indrees) was always going to be a stiff target for Etihad in fading light. With an over to go they still needed 16 which they reduced to 9 from two balls. Azam Qazi hit a six before two were scrambled from the last ball leaving the scores level. The tension mounted before ACST Chairman, Michael “Cat” Maher declared Etihad the winners on virtue of losing fewer wickets in the game. Sankat Nayak was man of the match.

The presentations, which also saw Southerners Gold, Richard Oster named as Player of the Tournament, brought the hugely successful event to a close.

A1GP Signs Up New Talent for its TV World Feed

London, Great Britain – The millions of A1GP World Cup of Motorsport fans who follow the fortunes of the series on their tv screens will have two new personalities to watch and listen to in Season Four. The series will have Diana Binks and James Hinchcliffe as its world feed pit lane reporters, working alongside its regular, vastly experienced commentary team of John Watson and Ben Edwards.

This will not be totally new territory for Hinchcliffe, who raced for A1 Team Canada in Seasons Two and Three. He has been a co-commentator for Champ Cars’ international TV feed and also made a guest appearance in the A1GP pit lane as a reporter last season in Sepang. He views taking on the role full-time as a natural next step: “I am thrilled that A1GP has asked me to be part of the pit lane line up for Season Four,” he commented. “I got the opportunity to work with A1GP TV last season and it’s great to now be on board full-time. This is shaping up to be the best season of A1GP yet, with the introduction of the new car, and it's awesome to think that I get to watch all the action unfold from pit lane. “

Talking about how his A1GP experience behind the wheel will help, he commented: “Obviously having driven in A1GP I hope I am able to bring a little bit of the driver’s perspective to the fans watching at home. There is so much that is happening in the driver’s seat and being able to relay all that excitement to those watching on television will definitely be a new and fun challenge for me.”

Diana Binks, who was born in Scotland, is no stranger to the world of motorsport, as she has worked in various categories from bikes to cars and currently fronts the British Formula 3 and British GT Championship for Channel 4 in the UK. She also hosts late night sport for Five and is a regular reporter on sportscars, triathlon and endurance sports events. Binks knows how tough being a pit lane reporter can be, having spent 22 hours of a Le Mans 24-hours in the pit lane. She has a wealth of experience working both in front of and behind the camera for the likes of Channel 4, Five, ITV, Sky Sports, Speed TV in the USA and Motors TV in Europe.

After following the previous seasons of A1GP on Five, she is excited about joining the team in China: “I am delighted to be joining the A1GP Team. I am equally looking forward to teaming up again with Ben Edwards having worked with him previously in the British Touring Car Championship. To be joining the team is very exciting, it will present many new challenges and I can't wait. I look forward to the prospect of working with John and James and hope that my experience will add to what is already a great team."

Richard Dorfman, Director of Broadcasting commented: “we are delighted to welcome both Diana and James to A1GP's broadcast team. Diana will bring some fresh new insights into our pit lane reports and James , being an active driver, will be able to provide our viewers with a unique viewpoint as to what it really takes to run the new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car around some of the world's most exciting motor racing venues.”

The first time the new team can be seen in action will be in A1GP Chengdu, China, 7-9 November 2008.

SRI LANKA LOOK TO FAB FOUR IN TITLE DEFENCE

Four of the players who helped Sri Lanka to their maiden Hong Kong Cricket Sixes triumph last year have been included in the team that will defend the title next week.

Captain Indika De Saram – the hero of Sri Lanka’s stunning final victory over the All-Stars – will lead the team once more.

He will be joined by three other members of the victorious 2007 squad, Jeewantha Kulatunga, Dilhara Lokuhettige and Kaushalya Weeraratne.

The three newcomers include talented all-rounder Gayan Wijekoon, who has played for his country at test level and in last year’s Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa.

“It’s a strong squad, packed with experience, and they’re bringing back players with a proven track record at the Sixes,” said tournament director Mark Burns. “They are going to be very difficult to beat.”

De Saram scored a tournament high of 40 not out when Sri Lanka recorded an imposing 127-3 in last year’s final.

Lokuhettige then played his part by dismissing Craig McMillan – the Player of the Tournament – with the first ball of the All-Stars innings.

Sri Lanka went on to win by 16 runs for their first Sixes success in 11 attempts.

The 2008 Hong Kong Cricket Sixes will be staged at the Kowloon Cricket Club on 8-9 November.

Sri Lanka have been drawn in the Sobers Group together with the 2008 All-Stars, Australia and Hong Kong.

This year’s All-Stars team will include test greats Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies), Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka), Justin Langer (Australia), Stephen Fleming (New Zealand) and Matthew Hoggard (England).

The Bradman Group contains India, Pakistan, England and South Africa.

Hosts Hong Kong have included in their squad five of the players who helped them win the ACC Trophy in Kuala Lumpur in August.

They include Najeeb Amar, who scored 100 and took four wickets as Hong Kong stunned the United Arab Emirates in the final.

He is joined from that winning team by Hussain Butt – Player of the Tournament at the 2004 Sixes – together with Monir Dar and the Ahmed brothers, Irfan and Nadeem.

Hong Kong will once again be captained by Manoj Cheruparambil while the squad is rounded out by Phil Pemberton.

Cheruparambil, Pemberton and Dar all played in last year’s Sixes.

“We’ve got guys who are good strikers of the ball and obviously our strength is our spin bowlers,” said Hong Kong coach Aftab Habib.

“It will be a case of making sure we hit our straps early and get some good totals on the scoreboard.

“The Sixes is a tremendous spectacle and I’m sure it will be a great weekend for everyone involved in Hong Kong cricket.”

Australia have chosen a squad containing some of the country's most promising young cricketers, including Michael Hill, who captained Australia's U19 ICC World Cup team last year.

The squad will be led by player-coach John Davison, who hit the headlines in 2003 when, playing for his native Canada, he stunned the West Indies with the fastest World Cup century in history.

“It should be a great experience for our team,” said Davison.

“We’ve got some very good up and coming cricketers in our side and it will be a fantastic experience for them to travel to Hong Kong and play against some talented opposition from around the world.

“The tournament does a fantastic job to help raise the profile of cricket in Hong Kong. I know they get great crowds, which shows the popularity of the sport and I’m sure this year’s tournament will be no exception.”

New direction at Senator Boats

INDUSTRY UPDATE: SENATOR BOATS LTD

20 October 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A new era for Hawke’s Bay boat building specialists

Summer marks the start of a new era for Hawke’s Bay boat building company, Senator.

The company has taken full control of sales nationwide and is set to build on its longstanding reputation for creating quality crafts.

Senator Boats was established by Wayne McKinley, an avid fisherman who built his first boat for a friend almost three decades ago.

Wayne now employs a team of 13 boat builders in his Napier factory and has a network of seven dealers selling Senator boats throughout New Zealand.

Senator’s new national sales manager Murray Thomson says part of the company’s planned growth involves the company working directly with its dealers nationwide.

“This means we are now supplying boats directly to our dealers from the factory, and supporting their sales and marketing activities,” says Murray.

“Working directly with our dealers ensures our high standards are maintained.”

Murray says the move to take full control of the business means Senator is “master of its own destiny” moving forward.

The inaugural Senator Dealer Conference held in September helped set the scene for many exciting future initiatives, including the upcoming launch of a new range next year.

The Senator Typhoon range of alloy plate boats will complement the company’s well respected and proven pontoon and offshore models. The range will feature alloy plate boats from 5.5 metres to 6.5 metres in cuddy style, along with 6.7 metres to 9.2 metres hard top crafts.

Murray Thomson says Senator will continue to build its quality pontoon and offshore boats, with the Typhoon series providing even more choice for boat lovers nationwide.

“We love building boats – and we know we create great boats customised to specific customer needs – so the Senator Typhoon range adds another option for boaties who love the quality and reliability of Senator.”

JAYASURIYA JOINS AWESOME ALL-STARS TEAM

JAYASURIYA JOINS AWESOME ALL-STARS TEAM

Living legend Sanath Jayasuriya will showcase his devastating batting skills at next month’s Hong Kong Cricket Sixes.

The Sri Lankan ace – one of the most lethal hitters in the game – has been confirmed for the showpiece at the Kowloon Cricket Club on 8-9 November.

He will join an awesome All-Stars team that already contains test greats Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming and Matthew Hoggard.

“I'm delighted to be playing in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes and I'm looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic weekend at the Kowloon Cricket Club,” said Jayasuriya.

“It will be great to team up with guys like Shiv, Justin, Stephen and Matthew, who have been my friends and respected opponents for many years in test and one day cricket, and hopefully we can put on a fantastic show for the fans.”

Jayasuriya, 39, is one of the true greats of the modern game, having racked up an astonishing 27 hundreds and 66 fifties in 421 one day internationals (ODIs).

Yet the left-hander has also enjoyed a stellar test career, scoring 14 hundreds and 31 fifties in 110 matches.

In addition, he is an extremely effective spin bowler with 310 ODI wickets and 98 test wickets to his name.

Jayasuriya revolutionised ODI batting with his aggressive tactics at the 1996 World Cup, taking advantage of fielding restrictions early in the innings by smashing the opening bowlers to all parts of the ground.

He was named Player of the Tournament as Sri Lanka lifted the trophy.

He retired from international cricket in 2006 but quickly reversed his decision. He quit tests again at the end of last year but continues to feature in Sri Lanka’s ODI squad.

The All-Stars have been pooled with defending champions Sri Lanka in the Sobers Group, meaning Jayasuriya will face a meeting with his countrymen on day one of the tournament.

“I'm especially anticipating our match against Sri Lanka on Saturday afternoon – that will be an interesting experience and a lot of fun also, I'm sure,” he said.

“The Hong Kong Cricket Sixes has a great reputation among players and I'm really keen to join in the action.”

Sixes tournament director Mark Burns predicted Jayasuriya would be a huge hit in Hong Kong.

“Sanath Jayasuriya is a thrilling player to watch – one of the most brutal strikers of a ball the sport has seen,” said Burns.

“I’m sure Hong Kong fans are going to relish the chance to see this great batsman in action. We can expect some fireworks from him.

”Ticket sales have been very strong since they went on sale two weeks ago and we expect this to continue, especially now that Jayasuriya has been confirmed.”

Australia and hosts Hong Kong are the remaining two teams in the Sobers Group while the Bradman Group will be contested by India, Pakistan, England and South Africa.

Tickets for the 2008 Sixes – priced at $780 for adults and $450 for children – are on sale at the following locations:

· China Cricket International, Sheung Wan (Tel: 2543 8500)

· Dot Cod Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar, Central (Tel: 2810 6988)

· Hong Kong Cricket Club, Happy Valley (Tel: 3511 8668)

· Kowloon Cricket Club, Jordan (Tel: 2376 4141)

The Hong Kong Cricket Sixes is fully sanctioned by the ICC and is the sport's longest-running, best-established and most high-profile sixes tournament.

Players who have taken part over the past 16 years include Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve and Mark Waugh, Viv Richards, Andrew Flintoff, Adam Gilchrist and Wasim Akram.

The tournament is organised and promoted by the Hong Kong Cricket Association’s commercial arm, China Cricket International Limited.

The HKCA’s proceeds from the Sixes will be ploughed directly back into cricket development in Hong Kong.
