Cricket : BLACKCAPS squad named for ODIs

BLACKCAPS squad named for first two One Day Internationals

The BLACKCAPS squad for the first two One Day International (ODI) games against the West Indies has been announced. The squad is:

Daniel Vettori (Captain)
Neil Broom
Grant Elliott
Daniel Flynn
Mark Gillespie
Jamie How
Brendon McCullum
Kyle Mills
Jacob Oram
Jeetan Patel
Jesse Ryder
Tim Southee
Ross Taylor

The squad contains three changes from the Twenty20 squad. Otago batsman Neil Broom earns his first BLACKCAPS call up, while Grant Elliott and Jamie How are recalled to the side.

Broom comes in as a replacement for Scott Styris, who broke a thumb in the first Twenty20 against the West Indies on Boxing Day.

Head of the selection panel, Glenn Turner, said Broom had shown his potential as an international batsman this year. “Neil performed well with the bat in Australia and India with the Emerging Players and New Zealand A sides,” Turner said. “He’s also been scoring a lot of runs in the State Championship this summer.”

Wellington all-rounder Elliott’s recall to the national side comes after solid performances in domestic cricket, including a 3 for 32 in the State Shield one-day competition, and scores of 63 and 78 with the bat in his two latest four-day outings.

“Grant gives us options with both bat and ball,” Tuner said. “He can come in down the order and push the ball around – and also offers a good bowling option with his medium-paced swing.”

The first ODI is at Queenstown on Wednesday 31 December. The second is at AMI Stadium, Christchurch, on Saturday 3 January.

Sailing : Day 48 onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe

Sam Davies’ daily log - Back on the Attack!

“Hello everyone

At last, the wind has shifted aft of the beam, after what seems like days of upwind sailing. That definitely wasn't in the brochure!!! What's more, the sun's come out, the fire hoses have (temporarily) switched off and it's actually quite pleasant on deck. Roxy's been averaging an easy 15 knots all day and so we're BACK ON THE ATTACK!!! The Wind Gods are definitely smiling on Roxy today. I actually feel rather guilty here enjoying the "summer sailing" I've got, when a lot of the fleet is suffering storm force winds and perilous waves. I am so sad for JoJo (Seb Josse), who was having an amazing race, before his boat, BT, got "dumped" by a freak wave. I am in pain for him, I can imagine what a terrible feeling it must be to see potential victory snatched away from you in an unlucky handful of seconds. I really hope he manages to repair and get going quickly. He's one of my favourite three skippers in this race! Go JoJo - you can do it! Yet again, these are signs of how powerful this ocean is and how fragile we are within.”

Sam Davies’ daily log - Living in a fridge

“Hello earthlings!
I hope that Father Christmas delivered to expectations, and that you have all eaten, drunk and watched too much Christmas TV. Out here on Roxy it is life as normal, trying to squeeze that extra half a knot of boatspeed out of Roxy in less than ideal conditions. Oh well, that's the luck of the draw and I am making the best I can. I was just having some "Foie gras" on toast for lunch today and I noticed the little phrase on the packet "once opened keep refrigerated". It's a phrase which causes much anxiety normally, in temperate conditions, and one is challenged to find the coolest spot on board, and then quite often defeated into throwing the rest away for fear of food poisoning! I reflected on the phrase, realising it has not at all bothered me in the last few weeks.... So.... clunk clunk clunk goes my brain..... does that mean..... clunk clunk... I'm now living in a fridge?

Sam Davies’ daily log - Christmas day

“Happy Christmas everyone!
Well, Father Christmas found Roxy last night and I am a very lucky girl. Still on the Roxy Rollercoaster, I had loads of presents to open this morning. And I am not sure I should tell anyone this, but now I am no longer alone. I have MEN on board. A "surfing Ken" (one of Barbie's ex's) and a "Grow your own male stripper". They must both be quite freezing, as Ken is in boardshorts and a T-shirt, and the stripper - well - it looks like he has already done his job (except the bow-tie). So where we are, I might have to find them some Roxy clothes. Christmas pants, Santa socks, pens, make-up, beauty products, puzzles, games, even a salad growing kit. I am going to be busy for the next few weeks playing with all of that. I also had a great video with messages from everyone recorded on it - it made me smile. THANKS to The Roxy Boys, Jeanne, Miranda, my Roxy girls (Flor, Maritxu, Sophie and everyone else at Roxy),Kate and the boys at FCL, Conrad, my Mum, Dad, Debbie and Romain for a wonderful Christmas! And the biggest present is just to be out here on my beautiful Roxy boat. An opportunity of a lifetime and a Christmas I'll never forget. Happy Christmas to everyone in the race office, and to all the other skippers, especially those who are limping back to port under jury rig - Mike, Dominique, Loick....
