VODAFONE WARRIORS TO PAY RESPECTS TO SONNY FAI AND FAMILY IN NRL TRIALS

Missing Vodafone Warriors forward Sonny Fai will be remembered at each of the club’s first two NRL trials, the first in Hamilton tomorrow night and the second at North Harbour Stadium on February 22.
The 20-year-old disappeared after saving his brother and four of his cousins at Bethells Beach on January 4.
Sonny played for both the Vodafone Warriors (NRL) and the Vodafone Junior Warriors (NYC) last year.
Tomorrow night players in both teams will pay their respects to their team-mate and his family by wearing black armbands at Waikato Stadium (the NRL side plays Melbourne while the NYC team faces a Waikato Selection).
The players will again wear armbands at North Harbour Stadium 10 days later when the NRL squad takes on North Queensland and the NYC side meets the Auckland Vulcans.
There will also be a minute’s silence at both stadiums before the NRL matches.
Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the club was working with Sonny’s family to honour him during the NRL season.
“We’ll announce more about what we’re planning to do closer to the season starting,” he said.
Meanwhile, the public will be able to contribute to the Victoria bush fire appeal tomorrow night.
Waikato Stadium management, together with the Hamilton City Council, today announced there would be a gold coin collection around the ground throughout the evening.

WORLD CUP STARS AND NEWCOMERS LINE UP FOR VODAFONE WARRIORS IN TRIAL AGAINST STORM

Kiwi World Cup winners Lance Hohaia, Manu Vatuvei and Sam Rapira plus Kiwi great Stacey Jones and major new signings Denan Kemp and Joel Moon will all feature for the Vodafone Warriors in their NRL trial against Melbourne at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton tomorrow night.

Coach Ivan Cleary hasn’t yet confirmed his starting combination but every player named is due to spend time on the field at some stage in the first of the club’s three warm-up matches ahead of their NRL opener against Parramatta at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday, March 14.

The match will be Jones’ first for the club in 1265 days – he last played for the Vodafone Warriors against Manly on August 27, 2005 – while ex-Brisbane team-mates Kemp and Moon will debut for their new club. Winger Kemp was the Broncos’ top try scorer last year with 19 in 24 matches. Moon, who has been used mainly in the centres in his 31 NRL matches so far, is expected to feature at standoff tomorrow night.

Another newcomer making his club debut will be Auckland-born halfback Liam Foran who’ll be facing his former club.

Apart from those players and the World Cup-winning trio, the Vodafone Warriors will have other 2008 front-liners on show in fullback Wade McKinnon, centre-winger Aidan Kirk, hooker Ian Henderson, loose forward Micheal Luck and second rower Ben Matulino.
Also in the side will be 19-year-old prop Russell Packer, who made his NRL debut last year and was, with Matulino, named in the National Youth Competition’s Team of the Year. One of their Vodafone Junior Warriors team-mates Elijah Taylor (18) has been confirmed in the NRL squad tomorrow night along with other 2008 NYC players Leeson Ah Mau, Isaac John, Daniel O’Regan and Mataupu Poching (Matulino, Ah Mau, Packer and Taylor are all eligible for the NYC team again this year).

New second rower Jacob Lillyman had earlier been ruled out of this trial as he continues his recovery from shoulder surgery – he is expected to be involved in at least one of the other two trials – while Michael Witt (quadriceps), Evarn Tuimavave (neck) and new hooker Lewis Brown (hand) were also left out.
That left a squad of 30 originally named for the Hamilton trial but today that was trimmed to 23.

Captain Steve Price and centre Brent Tate will miss this trial as well. Both were ruled out of last year’s World Cup final, Price with a torn calf and Tate with a hip flexor problem; they’re still working their way back to full fitness.
In the same category is Kiwi centre Jerome Ropati, who survived the World Cup campaign despite a knee injury. Halfback Nathan Fien (neck) and second rower Simon Mannering (groin) aren’t playing against the Storm either and nor is new back rower Ukuma Ta’ai (ribs). The other player not named is fullback Kevin Locke, who will turn out for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in their NYC warm-up game against a Waikato Selection (kicking off at 5.30pm).

Tomorrow night’s match will showcase the NRL’s new dual refereeing concept. It’s in use for all trials this year before being fully introduced in all games when the season starts on March 13.
The Vodafone Warriors’ squad for the NRL trial starting at 7.30pm is: Leeson Ah Mau, Patrick Ah Van, Liam Foran, Ian Henderson, Aaron Heremaia, Lance Hohaia, Isaac John, Stacey Jones, Denan Kemp, Aidan Kirk, Epalahame Lauaki, Micheal Luck, Wade McKinnon, Ben Matulino, Joel Moon, Daniel O’Regan, Russell Packer, Mataupu Poching, Sam Rapira, Herman Retzlaff, Malo Solomona, Elijah Taylor, Manu Vatuvei.

Rugby Stars Rave About New Website Launched By Tracy Edwards

Being in a rugby scrum is something famous yachtswoman Tracy Edwards MBE has always wanted to do. And she got her chance yesterday for the launch of her new website www.rugbytalks.co.uk which makes it easy for event bookers to find a Rugby star or expert for motivational talks, after dinner speeches or award ceremonies.

She battled for the ball during a photo-call with former England hard man Brian Moore at the offices of the Professional Rugby Players Association (PRA) in Twickenham.

He was nicknamed 'Pit bull' in his heyday as a professional rugby player and is now a popular columnist and broadcast commentator about his favourite sport and agrees with Tracy that rugby players are great ambassadors for sporting achievement.

Tracy, who is famed for skippering the first all female around the world yacht crew, is a keen rugby fan and knows many players who are fantastic role models.

Big names in Rugby have been lining up to join the internet site devised by Tracy who is a top class professional speaker herself and knows the value of sporting motivation.

She chose the eve of the start of the six nations matches to launch the new venture and knows there will be plenty of high achievers now and in the future to keep the website fed. She said: “We see this website as a big step forward in raising the profile of our sports personalities, their fantastic achievements and inspirational work off the pitch.
“It is especially important at the moment for organisations and businesses of all kinds to feel good about themselves and know the value of motivational and inspirational stories about the fabulous personalities who make this sport so special.”

Apart from details about rugby speakers, www.rugbytalks.co.uk website also has latest news about the sport and background history to make it easy for companies to find out about the stars and supply information to their audiences. The new online service also has links to events and press coverage for added value.

It has some prestigious supporters amongst the rugby community, including former England internationals, Lawrence Dallaglio MBE, Brian Moore and the Professional Rugby Players Association (PRA), headed by CEO and former England international, Damian Hopley.

Lawrence Dallaglio said: “Rugby is rich pickings when it comes to sporting heroes. There are plenty to choose from and it is great to find an internet location where you can easily find them. I urge people to put this website into their favourite’s box and book a speaker without delay.”

Similarly Brian Moore (pictured) looks forward to the assistance this new website will bring; “As a former England player and now as a BBC broadcaster, I am uniquely placed to witness all aspects of this great sport from all angles. No matter where I turn I meet individuals with fantastic stories of courage, personal achievement and team spirit– the stuff of sporting legends who are fantastic role models,” he said.
As a skilled speaker trainer and member of the Professional Speakers Association Tracy will support members of the PRA with their presentation skills and content when requested.

The PRA Benevolent Fund supports professional rugby players and their families in the event of serious injury, death, illness or hardship. Damian Hopley said: “A big part of the PRA’s work is to develop players’ off field skills and prepare them for life after rugby, via our Player Development Programme. The training opportunities and exposure offered by Tracy and www.rugbytalks.co.uk will be extremely beneficial to our members.”

Tracy added: ”I am thrilled the PRA recognises the value of the website and look forward to working with them. We are also delighted to be able to do something to support the players and the PRA Benevolent Fund, a very worthy cause close to the hearts of professional rugby players in England.”

Squash : Lee Beachill Retires From The Men’s World Tour

Former World No.1 and three time British National Squash Champion Lee Beachill has announced his retirement from the men’s professional World Tour and confirmed that the National Squash Championships ’09, which start today in Manchester, will be his final tournament appearance, having been unable to return to full fitness following surgeries in July and October of last years to repair cartilage damage to his left knee.

In a professional playing career spanning over thirteen years, the 31-year-old who in October 2004 became the first English born player to be crowned World No.1 won Gold Medals at consecutive Commonwealth Games in Manchester and Melbourne respectively, helped England to win successive Men's World Team Championships in 2005 and 2007, and extended his PSA World Tour haul to nine titles, from eighteen final appearances.

Renowned for his impeccable on-court behaviour and for an aesthetically pleasing and classically constructed style, with beautifully accurate drives which created a foundation for one of the soundest games in the world, Beachill has been trying to extend his career with the aid of a brace to support his troublesome knee. However, following an extensive rehabilitation programme he has eventually conceded that the symptoms experienced over recent months have resulted in him no longer being able to continue to compete professionally.

The Englishman from Pontefract in Yorkshire, who has reached six of the last seven British National finals, winning three of them, believes that the National Squash Centre in Manchester is a fitting venue to announce the end of his playing career and hopes still to be good enough for one more tilt at the coveted title.

"It is with great sadness that I have to announce my retirement at a stage in my career where I felt I still had so much to offer. Unfortunately injuries play a part in the careers of all professional athletes and I’m no exception!” explained the former World No.1.

Tributes have been received from many of those who have worked with one of England’s finest ever squash players during his thirteen year playing career, including Paul Walters of internationalSPORTgroup, the sports marketing and management company who represent the squash star, Ziad Al-Turki, Professional Squash Association Chairman, Nick Rider, England Squash Chief Executive Officer, and life long coach Malcolm Willstrop.
Paul Walters of internationalSPORTgroup, said: “Lee is one of the most professional and successful players that internationalSPORTgroup has represented, but above everything else he has been a close and loyal friend.

“His injury has undoubtedly robbed him of many future titles, which makes it even more poignant that he has announced his retirement at the British National Championships in Manchester which was where it all started for him. He was the first person to successfully defend the title and it was the way he did it, beating Peter Nicol in the final, which will live forever in my memory as I am sure it will for the hundreds of spectators who witnessed a truly magnificent performance that day. The Nationals is a title that I know he treasures alongside all of his other notable achievements. Many doubted that he would ever scale the heights that his talent so richly deserved, but Lee proved many people wrong and it has been a privilege to share the highs and lows of a memorable career and a valued friendship which will continue regardless of which direction his career now takes him.”

Professional Squash Association Chairman, Ziad Al-Turki said: “I have known Lee for about five years having first met him at the Saudi International in 2005 and since then I have had the pleasure of knowing him as a professional athlete and a colleague on the PSA Board. As a promoter I can say that Lee has been one of the most professional players on the Men’s World Tour and was always willing to do whatever was asked of him for the benefit of the event and the sport as a whole. His dedication to squash and knowledge of the sport have made him one of the most committed, most hard working members on the PSA Board. He will be missed by all his fans, but knowing how dedicated he is to squash, I’m sure that he will take his contributions from inside the court to new areas within the sport. I, and the entire PSA Board, wish Lee the best of luck and thank him for the all that he has contributed to squash, as one of its greatest players."

England Squash Chief Executive, Nick Rider, added: "Lee is the consummate professional. I’ve had the privilege to watch him in an England shirt in European and World Championships, where he always gave his all. As team captain, his understated yet passionate leadership style was crucial whenever the team was under pressure. He has real quality which we’ll miss - and he’s an example to aspiring young players everywhere."
Malcolm Willstrop, who has been instrumental in Lee’s development into one of the sport’s leading players, concluded: “Having been associated with Lee from the age of eight, it is a sad day when he is forced to retire from the PSA World Tour. He has achieved so much, especially in Manchester, so it is appropriate that his career ends at the British National Championships. But for the injury there were no signs that he was not as good as ever, so that is the regret. He has already given the game so much, and I am sure that whatever role that he finds in the sport he has even more to give. Aspiring young players could do a lot worse than to emulate Lee, both for the way he played the game and the manner in which he conducted himself.”

The three time National Champion has proved himself to be both determined and resilient in his illustrious career, and remarkably has achieved everything in the sport after a serious road accident in December 1997 in which he broke his back in two places and was told that he would never play squash again.

“I feel over the past thirteen years that I have had to overcome some pretty big hurdles but the knee injury I sustained last summer has proved one too many,” added Beachill.

“Despite the best efforts of my physiotherapist Ian Horsley and my surgeon Professor Christor Rolf, this is one that will not allow me to compete at a level I am happy with, and having set myself such high standards it’s difficult to justify falling short after many years of success.

“When I try and think of all the people who have helped me over the years it reduces me to tears! All the passion, dedication and loyalty that so many people have shown me makes this decision even harder. There are hundreds of people I would like to thank, but in particular:

“Malcolm Willstrop, my coach for the last twenty-two years, my advisor, my mentor and most importantly my loyal friend. You know what you mean to me, you told me I could achieve things I didn’t think were possible and you’ve taught me all I know both as a squash player and as a person. I could never repay the dedication you have given to me but I’m proud to be able to say I became the best player in the world and I did it your way.
“Jonah Barrington, a legend, mentor and friend. I could never explain to you the influence you have had on my career and my heart felt thanks go to you and your family.

“David Pearson, Paul Carter and the England Squash World Class Performance Team of physiotherapists, physiologists, doctors, coaches and analysts headed by Peter Hirst, you are the best group I’ve ever worked with. My proudest moments are those when I was wearing an England shirt - you all stuck by me through thick and thin and for that I can’t thank you enough.

“Ian Horsley, the best physiotherapist in the world! I’ve lost count of the amount of times you’ve stuck me back together and the years have gone so quickly. Thank you so much for your dedication and reluctance to give up on me when many others would have.

“Paul Walters, my manager and my friend. You showed faith in me when others didn’t. You supported me when others didn’t. You’re a true friend and I appreciate all you have done for me.

“Peter Nicol, the greatest player ever. A true gent both on and off the court and someone I'm honoured to say is one of my best friends.
“David Campion, the nicest guy you could ever meet and the greatest striker of a squash ball you will ever see. Thank you for all the hard work you have put in to me over the years.”

Pontefract Squash Club, you have been a ‘rock’ of support to me throughout my career. Thank you to each and everyone of you who have spent their hard earned money and time supporting me over the years. In particular, special thanks go to my business partner, close friend and Pontefract owner Mick Todd whose support I will never forget and with whom I look forward to future success together.

“James Willstrop, over to you my friend! I hope I've had as much influence on your career as you’ve had on mine. I’ll always be there for you.

“My sponsors Dunlop and Hi-Tec, whose rackets and footwear have made a crucial difference to my performance.

“My close friends, you know who you are. Thanks for the years of support and for keeping my feet well and truly on the ground. It means so much.
“My family, mum, dad and my sister Sally, you have given me more than I could ever have wished for and I could not have achieved anything without your unconditional love and support - from the bottom of my heart I thank you for all you have given me.

“And finally, my partner Nicola and our children Jessica and Ben. All I can say is that you are my world - you’ve been there through all of the ups and the downs, through the disappointments and setbacks as well as the success. I feel privileged to have played a sport for a living that I love so much, but not nearly as much as I love you,” Beachill concluded.

HUGE DEMAND FOR EDEN PARK INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

All premium seating at Eden Park is sold out for the BLACKCAPS One-Day International against India on Saturday, March 14.

More than 16,000 tickets for the general public, members and corporates have already been sold for the match, taking up all of the capacity of the West Stand, ASB Stand and Panasonic Stand.

With the venue capacity reduced due to reconstruction, fewer than 3,500 Terrace tickets remain to be sold for the match.

"This event is quickly moving to a sell-out," said Peter Dwan, New Zealand Cricket's Commercial Manager.

"The Auckland cricketing public have correctly identified this match as the highlight of the summer in the city and demand has been building steadily since before Christmas.

"Given the limited capacity still to sell, there is no doubt that people who do not act quickly now to secure their tickets will miss out on match day," he said.

Dwan noted that there was strong demand for all of the Indian tour matches, with a particular interest in the Hamilton ODI and the two Twenty20 internationals, scheduled for Christchurch on February 25 and Wellington on February 27.

Hockey : MCLEOD WIDENS THE NET TO EXPAND HIS PLAYER BASE

The Black Sticks continue their build up to the Oceania Cup this month with a four test series in Wellington and Auckland.

The Indians were invited to play New Zealand to help the Black Sticks prepare for the vital clash with Australia which will be played in Invercargill in late August. At the same time the series will provide an opportunity for National Coach Shane McLeod to expand his player base.

Five new caps were introduced at the Punjab Gold Cup earlier this month. They were North Harbour’s David Green, Shay Neal and Priyesh Bhana plus Wellington’s Blair Hilton and Joel Baker.

The new caps were part of a successful tournament highlighted by a historic win over world champions Germany to take third place.

Canterbury defender Brad Shaw and Harbour midfielder Bryce Collins, who were both unavailable for the Punjab Gold Cup, add experience to the side to meet India.

The New Zealand side to play India was selected prior to the Punjab Gold Cup. The team was selected from all available players from the Auckland and Christchurch regional training centres.

In form New Zealand players to look out for during the four match series include up and coming young striker Nick Wilson, midfielder Steve Edwards, defender Dean Couzins and keeper Kyle Pontifex.

Following the series the Black Sticks compete in the Azlan Shah Tournament in Malaysia in April followed by a home series against a yet to be confirmed team, in August.

Two invitational sides selected from the national training centres, will also provide development opportunities for Shane McLeod. The NZ A Southern team will play India in Wellington on Tuesday, 24 February and the NZ A Northern team will step out two days later on Thursday 26 February. Both teams are bolstered by selected Black Sticks.

New Zealand rugby fans and players unite to show support for Australian bushfire victims

New Zealand rugby fans and players will be invited to express their sympathy and support for victims of Australia’s tragic bushfires at the three Rebel Sport Super 14 season-opening home matches this weekend.

New Zealand Red Cross volunteers will be at the opening Highlanders - Brumbies match on Friday night at Carisbrook, Dunedin, to accept donations for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. New Zealand Red Cross volunteers will also be at the Crusaders - Chiefs game at AMI Stadium in Christchurch and at the Hurricanes vs Waratahs match at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, on Saturday accepting donations.

A moment’s silence will also be held prior to kick-off at all three matches as a mark of respect to remember the victims and the many people impacted by the fires in Victoria.

New Zealand Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew said with two Australian teams playing in New Zealand on the opening weekend of the Rebel Sport Super 14, it was timely for rugby in New Zealand to show its support.

“This is a human tragedy on an unimaginable scale and everyone involved in rugby in New Zealand wishes to express our sympathy and concern for those who have lost loved ones and provide tangible support for those now needing to rebuild their lives.”

The Blues will be playing their opening match against the Western Force in Perth where collections will also be held for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

New Zealanders can also make donations to the appeal via New Zealand Red Cross by visiting www.redcross.org.nz or by calling 0900 33 200 to make an automatic $20 donation.

MEDIA RELEASE - NZ DEAF CRICKET ASSOCIATION
5 February, 2009 / Revised 11 February, 2009

2009 Deaf Cricket World Cup countdown begins

With just under 11 months to go before the kick-off of the 2009 Deaf Cricket World Cup, the New Zealand Deaf Cricket Association (NZDCA) has announced two further training camps for team selection. These are in addition to three recent matches held at Takapuna, and also with an upcoming regional match at Blenheim.

The 2009 Deaf Cricket World Cup will be staged over two weeks beginning December 28, 2009 at Auckland’s Waikaraka Park, and involves host country New Zealand competing against Australia, England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Bangladesh and current deaf cricket world champions, India. There may possibly be other entrants.

There will be two training camps staged from which the New Zealand squad will be selected in October, NZDCA Secretary, Mr Mike Coronno stated. The dates are as follows;

Wellington: Sat May 30th – Mon June 1st 2009
Auckland: Sat Oct 24th - Mon Oct 26th 2009

Participants are required to have a qualifying hearing loss of 55 decibels in the better ear, and be a qualifying playing member of a cricket club affiliated to NZ Cricket.

“Having the opportunity to play international cricket on your home turf is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Mr Coronno said, “especially against countries such as England and Australia who have players that have county and State representative players, respectively.”

The New Zealand Men’s deaf cricket team has participated in two previous deaf cricket World Cups, including the initial 1995 Melbourne tournament to the most recent 2005 competition held in Lucknow, India. In between these was the aborted tournament in South Africa, 2000.

New Zealand Women’s Sevens training squad named

New Zealand Women’s Sevens Coach Darryl Suasua has today announced his 17-strong training squad for the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai.

The squad will assemble on 23 February for a five-day training camp at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health in Albany, Auckland. The final squad for Dubai will be named on 26 February.

“I am really excited by the talent that we have in the training squad. The trial camp was very competitive and the growth of the team overall has been outstanding,” Suasua said.

“The toughest decision I had to make was who to leave out of this camp and I still have some hard choices ahead when I finalise the final 12 players for Dubai,” he said.

Suasua said there was a real national spread amongst the squad.

“We have nine Provincial Unions represented which shows you just how popular women’s rugby still is in some of the smaller provinces, given that only six unions compete in the Women’s National Provincial Championship.”

Ten of the players named are current members of the Black Ferns squad.

The 2009 Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens takes place in Dubai from 5-7 March.

New Zealand Women’s Sevens training squad: Kelly Brazier (Otago), Kendra Cocksedge (Canterbury), Exia Edwards (Bay of Plenty), Julie Ferguson (Hawkes Bay) Victoria Grant (Auckland), Carla Hohepa (Otago), Linda Itunu (Auckland), Justine Lavea (Auckland), Huriana Manuel (Auckland), Angela McGregor (Auckland), Hannah Porter (Auckland), Anna Richards (Auckland), Aimee Sutorius (Wellington), Teresa Te Tamaki (Auckland), Renee Wickliffe (Counties Manukau), Rachel Wikeepa (Waikato), Selica Winiata (Manawatu).

Backyard cricket champions’ 2009 L&P Cup campaign underway

• Tough choice facing Brew Bros selectors at player trials
For some, it’s just a bit of fun in the summer sun. But for The Brew Bros, defending
champions of the L&P BYC Tournament cup, backyard cricket is a way of life.
Since winning $3000 and a year’s supply of L&P at the inaugural backyard cricket
Tourney last year, the team has been preparing for the 2009 competition that’s on
again in Paeroa on March 7th in the best way they know how – drinking lots of L&P.
However, the team experienced a major setback in their campaign preparations last
month when one of their five-member winning squad pulled out due to a groin
injury.
The Brew Bros are now holding trials over the coming weeks for their mates who
are keen to fill the coveted remaining spot on their champion team.
“Filling the final spot is going to be a tricky one,” says Brew Bros captain Daniel
Brown. “All our mates want in, but there can only be one.”
“Along with the necessary skills, we'll be looking for how much L&P they can drink
while still bringing their A-game to the pitch, of course.”
In March last year, The Brew Bros beat out 47 other teams in the inaugural L&P
BYC Tourney to take the Cup. More than 250 teams applied for the 48 team slots
that were available.
This year’s event has been extended to 64 teams and will feature additional
competitions and prizes, including BBQs, a lawnmower and meat packs. Teams who
drop out of the main round for the L&P Cup will still be in the running to compete
for the L&P Shield, Plate and Bowl.
Mr Brown says the Brew Bros are not daunted by the prospect of increased
competition at the 2009 Tourney, and welcomes challengers from every part of the
country to come to Paeroa on March 7th to try and beat them.
“We know the competition is going to be more fierce this year, so we’ve been
spending a lot more time strategising and talking about practising while drinking
what's left of the year's supply of cold L&Ps that we won.”
“I'm picking that a passion for backyard cricket and regular refreshment from the
good fellas at L&P will be the winning combination for the team who lifts the
trophy this year.”
Registrations are now open for the L&P BYC 2009 Tourney through the web site
www.paeroabyc.co.nz
L&P – Official sports drink of Backyard Cricket since ages ago.

Notes:
1. L&P Backyard Cricket Tourney will be held in Paeroa on Saturday 7th March
2. The locals of Paeroa will host the Tourney in their backyards.
3. 16 backyards have been specifically selected by L&P for the Tourney.
4. 64 teams will compete, 5 people per team, and there will be 6 reserve teams.
5. The Backyard Cricket rules will differ slightly depending on the backyard,
and will be decided on the day by the competing teams.
6. Registrations and more information will be at www.paeroabyc.co.nz

Sailing : Day 93 onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe

Sam Davies’ daily log - Washing machine conditions onboard Roxy

"Fewer than 800 miles to go; the finish seems to be getting close!

From now on though, Roxy is going to start to slow down as we get overtaken by the high pressure that is rushing up behind us. Yet again I am going to have a frustrating few days of light winds - the Atlantic is really testing my light airs sailing. What’s more, my wish to be home by Valentine's Day is looking even more difficult to achieve!

So instead of trying to dodge the high, which seems almost impossible, I am trying to put Roxy in the best place to catch the wind on the other side. This is easier said than done, as the forecasts are pretty vague.

I am, however, incredibly glad of the forecast for Marco's sake, as the light winds will hopefully enable Safran to get to the finish safely. After all Marco has done, he deserves to get there and I am keeping everything crossed for a safe passage for him and Safran.

Yesterday was wet and bumpy, yet fast and fun! As the winds were dropping I had plenty of exercise to do to shake out reefs and change up headsails: we are now sailing under full sail. Roxy is nice and clean, as the tons of water have nicely rinsed the deck and cockpit! The calmer weather should now leave the decks dry until the finish, so I must make sure not to spill my tea or dinner on the deck as there will probably not be any more "washing machine" conditions!

At 1100 UK time, Sam Davies aboard Roxy was in 3rd position, 758 miles from the finish line in Les Sables d’Olonne, France

Golf : MONTY AIMS TO EXTEND EUROPEAN TOUR RECORD IN KOREA

Caption: Colin Montgomerie will be aiming to add to his 31 European Tour victories when the second Ballantine’s Championship is staged at Pinx Golf Club on the island of Jeju, Korea from April 23-26. Photo by: Parallel Media Group

Living legend Colin Montgomerie has been added to the star-studded field for the forthcoming Ballantine’s Championship in Korea.

The Scottish ace – the most prolific British winner on the European Tour with an astonishing 31 titles – will tee it up in the €2.1 million showpiece at Pinx Golf Club on Jeju island from April 23-26.

“Monty” has won the European Tour Order of Merit title a record eight times and has also enjoyed plenty of success in Asia with tournament victories in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

His elevated status in golf was underlined recently when he was named captain of the European team for next year’s Ryder Cup.

“I've always enjoyed playing in Asia and have been fortunate enough to win there several times, so I'm very happy to be returning to the region for the Ballantine's Championship,” he said.

“I’ve heard fantastic reports about the inaugural tournament – I'm told the course, organisation and hospitality were all outstanding – so I am very much looking forward to experiencing it all myself at this year's event.

“I know Ballantine’s and the organisers are assembling a world class field, so it promises to be a fantastic week at Pinx Golf Club.”

Montgomerie joins a line-up that already includes three time Major winner Ernie Els, world No.6 Henrik Stenson, world No.12 Lee Westwood, defending champion Graeme McDowell and former Masters champion Fred Couples.

Pinx was also the venue for last year’s inaugural Ballantine’s Championship when Northern Ireland’s McDowell triumphed in dramatic fashion by edging out India’s Jeev Milkha Singh on the third extra hole.

Ballantine’s is title sponsoring the tournament – which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours and Korea PGA – for a minimum of three years.

Titans donate $10,000 to bushfire appeal

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans will donate a total of $10,000 towards the Victorian bushfire appeal, including a donation of more than $3000 out of the players’ own pockets.

The players met of their own accord after training this morning to discuss donating money towards the appeal.

There will also be a collection for the appeal at the Titans Members Fan Day at Firth Park, Mudgeeraba on Sunday.

Sailing : British, Italian Teams Earn Quarter Final Berths

Pre-race favourite teams battled ferociously in the Rangitoto Channel today to secure their places in the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series quarter finals to be sailed tomorrow.

Italy’s Luna Rossa skippered by Peter Holmberg pulled out a heart-stopping one-second win over the China Team while Britain’s TEAMORIGIN was under the gun until skipper Ben Ainslie scored a penalty against France’s Pataugas K-Challenge in a spinnaker luffing confrontation that took them far above their proper course.

With just four days of competition remaining, TEAMORIGIN will race tomorrow against Damiani Italy Challenge in one quarter final match. The other quarter final will be America’s BMW Oracle Racing against Luna Rossa. Weather permitting, the semi finalists will race tomorrow to determine who will race the top seed Swiss boat Alinghi in the Challenger Final. The winning challenger will meet Emirates Team New Zealand in a seven-race match on Friday and Saturday.

Peter Holmberg’s victory came as Luna Rossa completed a penalty turn on the finish line. British match race champion Ian Williams steering China Team had laid the penalty on the Italians 30 seconds before the start as they fought for the right hand position on the line.

With the penalty hanging over him Holmberg enjoyed a small lead at the start and ever so gradually eked it out to a 150 metre lead at the finish. He jammed his boat around in a tight turn bringing it almost to a halt as it spun around. Williams carried fresh breeze down to the line and crossed at speed but not before Holmberg crawled across to take the gun,

“I’ve done a lot of penalty turns in my career,” Holmberg said afterwards, “but it’s tough making 24 tons go 360 degrees and keep it moving!”

A penalty featured in the other match too as TEAMORIGIN fought a drama-filled skirmish with the charged-up French K-Challenge to stay in the regatta. Ainslie did an outstanding job to start on port tack right next to the committee, forcing K-Challenge helmsman Sebastian Col to tack away. The British boat protected the right up the beat, but the French instigated a tacking duel that evened up the game.

With the top mark in sight, TEAMORIGIN dialed down and tacked just in front of K-Challenge, holding them out by nine seconds at the top mark. However the British spinnaker set was slow and K-Challenge rolled them. In the ensuing drama, Ainslie luffed the French boat up twice. The French were penalized for failing to keep clear and lost time recovering their spinnaker, which sagged off to leeward after the halyard let go. Ainslie led the rest of the way, secure in the knowledge that the French still had to complete their penalty turn.

The breeze died after the completion of two races this morning. A long and fruitless wait for wind in warm, damp and humid conditions ended at 1600 hours.

BUSHFIRE APPEAL

Rugby League will direct an initial cash donation of well over $100,000 to the Victorian Bushfire victims in the first stage of a support program that hopes to raise tens of thousands more dollars in the weeks and months ahead.

As well as providing $40,000 to the Red Cross Appeal, Rugby League will provide $30,000 for Lifeline Australia to provide support services for grief stricken families and $30,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia to support the burns unit at Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital.

The announcement follows close consultation with two of the game’s One Community Charities (Lifeline and Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia) who are themselves part of the assistance effort.

“This has touched the lives of every Australian,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.

“Only in Australia it seems could we be devastated by fires in one part of the continent and floods in another, yet it is a part of our national identity that we pull together and lend a hand.”

Australian Rugby League Chairman, Mr Colin Love AM, said that Rugby League offered its deepest sympathies to all who had been victims of the tragedy.

“There is only so much that money can repair,” Mr Love said.

“Our hearts go out to those who have suffered such devastating loss.”

Lifeline Australia has been stretched to the limit in providing counselling for victims.

“Lifeline has called for extra volunteers and has activated intensive response activities within our network,” said Chief Executive Officer, Dawn O’Neil AM.

“We urgently need funds to assist us with co-ordinating our response of extra counselling services and community recovery – at a time when we are already stretched dealing with the Queensland floods.”

The Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia says funds from Rugby League will go directly to the burns unit of the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, where bushfire victims are being treated.

“Burns are usually horrific and only the families really see the full extent of the suffering,” Director of the CHFA, Nikki Johnston, said today.

“Equipment such as respirators that moisten the air to ease a victim’s breathing and ‘turning beds’ can make a big difference as we face on-going challenges in this area.”

NRL clubs will also manage public collections at key trial matches in the weeks ahead with the Melbourne Storm planning additional donations and a major fund-raiser around their first match at Etihad Stadium.

The Storm players have announced a season-long commitment to establish The Shire of Murrindindi (which takes in Kinglake) as its major charity focus.

The players say they will raise funds for infrastructure and sporting facilities.

The Brisbane Broncos will donate $10,000 to the appeal, in addition to the $10,000 already donated by the Broncos Leagues Club. Players and staff will make personal donations and the club will help organise collections at trials against the Titans and the Raiders over the next two weeks.

The Knights players are this week conducting a food and blanket drive, Wests Tigers are raising funds at the Foundation Cup match with players and staff to donate money (the club will match player and staff donations) while the Titans players are each making a personal contribution to the Bushfire Appeal.

The Raiders Leagues club group, has donated $14,000 and further support is on the way from other Leagues Clubs through both Clubs NSW and NSW Leagues Clubs Association.

Rugby : Eddie Jones Steps Down

Eddie Jones has decided to step down as Director of Rugby at the end of the current season.

He will be replaced by Brendan Venter, with effect from July 1, 2009.
Eddie Jones said: "After careful consideration, I have decided to leave Saracens at the end of the current season. My reasons are entirely personal. My wife and daughter have always given me unqualified support but it is now time for me to put the family needs first. I have greatly enjoyed my time with Saracens extending back to 2006 and I wish the directors, staff and players well in the future. Naturally I remain 100% committed to the Saracens cause and eagerly look forward to building on the progress we have made this season and ensuring we challenge for a top 4 finish in the Premiership and maintain our strong momentum in the European Challenge Cup."

Nigel Wray, chairman, said: "Obviously we are all very disappointed to lose Eddie, but we are very grateful for all his hard work, inspiration and the terrific structural changes he has made at the club, which will hold us in great stead for the future. I know that we will all remain friends and keep in close contact".

Wray added: "Brendan has an outstanding knowledge of the Guinness Premiership, following his success as coach at London Irish, and he has become well known and well respected at Saracens during the course of this season, after being introduced and recommended by Eddie as a specialist coach. We warmly welcome him to the club on a full-time basis."

Motoring : Wayne Boyd Confirms Graduation To Leading British Formula 3 Team

Reigning 2008 British Formula Ford Champion Wayne Boyd will compete in the top class of the British Formula 3 International Championship in 2009 with VW powered team T-Sport, backed by DHL.

Wayne evaluated a number of F3 teams during testing in the run up to the Christmas break before deciding to sign for the Brackley based squad. T-Sport’s VW engine deal and a team culture of nurturing and developing drivers, combined with sound engineering, a stable structure and a will to win swung the decision.

"All the winter testing in F3 has been absolutely brilliant,” said Wayne. “I've been flattered by the number of people who have been interested in me driving for their team and I thank them all. Everyone we drove with was fabulous but Russell [T-Sport team boss] and Skelly’s [T-Sport chief engineer] enthusiasm and eagerness to help me learn really shone through. The overall package they were offering and their new deal with VW won the day for me. They are racers and absolutely focused on winning, which suits me fine! I've got so much to learn in 2009 and I look forward to the future with excitement. I can't wait to get back on the track and try the new VW engine.”

VW Motorsport boss Kris Nissen said, “We are delighted to have Wayne Boyd in the Volkswagen line-up for the British Formula 3 Championship. With good races in 2008 and positive winter testing Wayne justified the cockpit in the T-Sport team. We are sure the Volkswagen Formula 3 engine can give a strong boost to this young talent."

2009 also sees the continuation of the long-term relationship with DHL. DHL’s Tim Dubois, who has known him since his early karting days in Northern Ireland said, "We are excited to continue our successful partnership with Wayne into 2009 and the world famous British Formula 3 Championship. We have been long time supporters of his career, he is a star and we look forward to working alongside him into the future as he climbs the motor sport ladder."

Wayne’s manager, Chas Cole, is excited about the coming season and believes T-Sport to be a good place for Wayne to grow. “T-Sport provides a combination of environment and competitive values where Wayne can learn and develop properly during his first year in slicks and wings. VW’s enthusiasm for Wayne has been really positive and together with T-Sport I’m confident that Wayne can hit the ground running,” said Cole.

T-Sport team boss Russell Eacott is excited to have the teenager in the team and said, “I’m just really happy that Wayne is with us. We’ve tested him and know his capabilities and his potential. Alan ‘Skelly’ Woodhead, the team’s chief engineer, is also really looking forward to working with Wayne as are the rest of the guys.”

Golf : Pro-AM Offers Four-Course French Feast

Four of the best regarded courses in France have come together to provide the foundation for the 2009 Cote d’Opale International Pro-Am - one of the most prestigious pro-ams in Europe.

Hardelot, Le Touquet Mer, Belle Dune and Wimereux, situated in the Pas de Calais region, will present an impressive challenge for professionals and amateurs alike when they gather to take part in the international tournament from April 22-25.

First staged in 1993 on France‘s Opale Coast, the event attracts more than 100 teams from countries including France, England, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Scandinavia, with each team composed of a professional and three amateurs.

The pro-am boasts a total prize fund of more than 50,000 euros this year - with a 3,000 euro first prize for the top professional and each pro guaranteed a cheque for at least 550 euros in the 72-hole strokeplay championship.

And there is still time for teams across the UK to enter, with the entry fee 670 euros per player which covers all golf including a practice round, entertainment and prizes for the top gross and nett scores, both daily and aggregate, throughout the four-day competition.

Tournament director Christophe Cantegrel, from specialist golf event organisers Golf First, said: “This is our 16th year and the tournament keeps on growing. People travel from all over Europe to play on some of the finest courses France has to offer.

“All the professionals enjoy it because the 72-hole format is like a European Tour event and they get to travel with many dedicated club members. Golf is always the winner.”

Situated in pine forest, Hardelot was designed by Tom Simpson in 1906 and is regarded as one of the top courses in Europe, while Le Touquet’s Mer course was originally created by the legendary Harry Colt and has hosted the French Open six times during its illustrious history.

Belle Dune only opened in 1992 but has already forged a reputation as one of the finest lay-outs in France while Wimereux is a Scottish-style links course offering views over the English Channel and lies only 30 minutes from Calais.

And the quality of the venues is matched off the course with a special Golf Village on hand to help golfers relax after their rounds and a list of sponsors including Callaway, Volvo, Air Mauritius, Toshiba and Guerlain already having signed up to the pro-am.

Amateurs in the event will play off three-quarter handicaps with a maximum handicap of 24 and each day will culminate with a cocktail party with drinks and regional tastings for the prize-giving ceremony, which takes place at The Palais de l'Europe in Le Touquet.

Accommodation is available at a variety of different hotels around Le Touquet ranging from two to four-star, and companies interested in buying a team entry can take advantage of the business package, with 4,500-euro fee entitling them to four nights' stay at a four-star hotel, a VIP welcome, goody bags and champagne in bedrooms as well as all golf.

French TV channel Sport + has already committed to providing coverage of the event and Kent clubs Littlestone and Langley Park will lead the UK’s bid for honours in April in a tournament Cantegrel believes will appeal to golfers all over the UK.

Cantegrel added: “We want more UK golf teams to come and experience the brilliant atmosphere and ambience of this tournament.

“It is our plan to involve more UK teams because of the ease of travel in these current economic times and it’s just great to play with pros and amateurs from all over Europe as well.”

Sheffield Half Marathon Reaches Another Milestone

The race has reached the milestone figure way ahead of the 2008 event, with numbers up by more than 600 from the same time last year.

Renowned for attracting runners from all ages, backgrounds and abilities, the Half Marathon again promises to be one of the biggest participation events in Sheffield’s sporting calendar and this year looks on course to reach its entry limit of 5,500.

Ian Thomas, entries co-ordinator, said: “We are delighted with the amount of entries we have had so far. It just goes to show that people are still willing to do their bit for charity, despite the economic climate.

“We are currently achieving around 250 entries a week, which is fantastic and raises the possibility that entry to the race will be closed before the day. It also shows that people haven’t been put off by the recent bout of bad weather!”

Since its launch in December last year, entries for the 2009 Half Marathon have been higher than at the same stage of any other year to date.

The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and 3k Fun Run will take place on 26 April 2009 at Sheffield International Venues managed facility Don Valley Stadium from 9:30am.

The ten chosen charities for this year’s event are Sheffield Teenage Cancer Trust, Motor Neurone Disease Association South Yorkshire, Macmillan Cancer Support, Myasthenia Gravis Association, RSPCA Sheffield, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

baseball : STATEMENT FROM THE NEW YORK YANKEES

RE: ALEX RODRIGUEZ

“We strongly believe there is no place in baseball for performance enhancing drugs of any type, and we support the efforts of the Commissioner to continually improve the testing process.

“We urged Alex to be completely open, honest and forthcoming in addressing his use of performance enhancing drugs. We take him at his word that he was. Although we are disappointed in the mistake he spoke to today, we realize that Alex—like all of us—is a human being not immune to fault.

“We speak often about the members of this organization being part of a family, and that is never more true than in times of adversity. Alex took a big step by admitting his mistake, and while there is no condoning the use of performance enhancing drugs, we respect his decision to take accountability for his actions. We support Alex, and we will do everything we can to help him deal with this challenge and prepare for the upcoming season.”

Cricket : New Zealand delays naming of side

The New Zealand cricket team is not expected to name its side for today's fourth One Day International against Australia in Adelaide until after 12.00 midday today (Adelaide time). This will allow for further assessment of wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum's shoulder injury, prior to today's match.

Sailing : Day 92 onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe

Sam Davies’ daily log - I can smell the land!

"Hello everyone!

Today has been a full-on, fun day on the water! The wind gradually built all day and we had 35 knots by the afternoon. The waves have become very difficult as Roxy and I have been passing over various banks and shelves around the Azores islands.

By the end of the afternoon, we were being attacked by giant breaking waves coming from different directions, coupled with wind reaching 40 knots. This resulted in a few wipeouts, caused by the breakers, plus several ‘fill-ups’ of the cockpit. The waves also managed to open a spinlock clutch, and very nearly tore away my lifebuoy!

The front is now passing over us, with frequent 45 knot squalls, so for a while we sailed under a 3 reefed main alone! I have gybed and Roxy is sneaking past just a few miles to the South of Terceira. I can see the lights of the towns on the island, and I can smell the land. It is the first time I have seen civilization since leaving Les Sables d'Olonne three months ago! I have to keep going back on deck to have another look, but then I see the huge scary waves in the moonlight and decide I'm better off inside!

Hopefully the sea state and wind will calm down soon so that I can put a bit more sail up and speed up a bit. For now though, it is very much "sail safe" mode onboard Roxy!

S x"

At 1100 UK time, Sam Davies aboard Roxy was in 3rd position, 1,055 miles from the finish line in Les Sables d’Olonne, France

Football : Wenger: We had a resilient, committed attitude

I believe we had a resilient, committed attitude in our 0-0 draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane and I'm proud of the players.

But I feel it is two points dropped because we had the best chances and we scored a regular goal that was ruled out by an illusionary foul seen only by the referee. I watched it three times on television and I still don't see what was wrong. That is why at the end of the day it's frustrating.

The referee has seen a push from Emmanuel Eboue but in fact it was Jonathan Woodgate who pushed him as well and then stumbled over Emmanuel Adebayor and falls down. If you see it again you see that it's nothing. It is not acceptable really, it is not serious.

I believe the person closest to the ball was the referee. He was in the best position and did not judge the push from Eboue, he judged the fact that Woodgate fell down.

As for Eboue's sending off, I believe that the first yellow card was very harsh. You have players who make 15 fouls in the game but don't get a yellow card. What he did was clumsy but the first yellow card was very hard. For the second one, if he has retaliated then he deserves a yellow. If someone saw that for real then he deserved to be sent off.

We deal with our problems internally and I want to first see the incident before I assess the situation. It was impossible to see what happened at the time because the ball had gone.

After Eboue's red card we kept playing with two strikers, we tried to win it and there was enough room to win this game. Tottenham created very little overall and even when we had 10 men they never really pulled us out of position.

We needed one or two saves from Manuel Almunia but overall I think we controlled them very well. What troubled us was creating because we were down to 10 men for so long and that's difficult to deal with.

On the injury front, Gael Clichy has had stitches in a head wound while Emmanuel Adebayor will be out for three weeks with a hamstring problem. But we have Carlos Vela, we have Nicklas Bendtner, we have Eduardo, we have Andrey Arshavin and we have Robin van Persie. We have plenty of strikers.

Current championship leader A1 Team Ireland has also hailed www.A1GP.com’s new facility, A1GP Dashboard.

A1 Team Ireland’s Mark Gallagher, David Kennedy and Teddy Yip were not travelling to the races in New Zealand but were able to enjoy enhanced coverage of their team’s successes in Taupo where Ireland extended its lead at the top of the championship table.

A1GP Dashboard, available on www.A1GP.com, allows users to watch a car’s progress around the track, together with that of its competitors, and to see speed, g-force, throttle, braking, gears and number of Powerboosts available for a driver to use. In effect, when combined with A1GP’s Live Timing facility, the user has the same information available to the drivers and teams.

“Since I was not travelling to New Zealand I used the Dashboard and Live Timing services on A1GP to see how the Team Ireland car was performing and it added a fascinating dimension to following the team,” said A1 Team Ireland Team Principal, Mark Gallagher. “It means that you can see what’s happening on your favourite car and those of its rivals, and when added to the TV coverage on race day it gives motorsport viewers an unparalleled experience. It shows once again A1GP’s commitment to innovation in making the series truly inclusive and accessible to fans all over the world.”

A1 Team Malaysia fans have always been known for their enthusiasm since helping the team win the A1GP.com Favourite A1 Team award which was presented at last season’s Gala Awards. A recent online competition on www.A1GP.com has again cemented the loyalty the team has from its fans.

Sailing : Podium position for PUMA in Qingdao

Difficult weekend of In Port racing in China

February 9, 2009 – PUMA today finished the Qingdao In Port race in third place, sailing in very light winds and thick fog in China. After racing was postponed on both Saturday and Sunday due to lack of wind and poor visibility, the third In Port race of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 finally got underway today in just four to six knots of wind. Finishing third in each of the two races, PUMA Ocean Racing, led by Skipper Ken Read (USA) took third place overall, earning three points. The team remains in third place overall going into leg five, which begins next Saturday, February 14th.

Just four of the seven boat Volvo Ocean Race fleet competed in the Qingdao In Port race, as the only boats to have made it to China at the end of leg four. Each boat therefore picks up valuable points on the remainder of the fleet. Leg five from Qingdao to Rio de Janeiro, which starts next weekend, is the longest leg of the entire race. The PUMA Ocean Racing team plan to spend the week making final preparations for the epic forty day leg, by switching from ‘in port’ to ‘offshore’ mode, loading the boat with sails, spares and provisions for the long leg. The race crew will also take some time to rest and relax before the marathon leg ahead.

Skipper Ken Read commented: “Today was a tricky day. Those weather conditions are the worst possible Volvo 70 sailing conditions you could have. These boats are what you call ‘sticky’ in that stuff – they’re not designed for this kind of sailing. Light conditions are hard work from a crew standpoint and it’s not good for spectators either. We had two bad starts, so it’s disappointing for us not to have done a little better, however, the crew sailed well to give us a podium finish, and from an overall competitive standpoint, it was good to get the In Port racing in. It means we benefit from the fact we managed to finish the last leg by gaining points on those boats who haven’t made it here [Telefonica Black, Ericsson 3 and Delta Lloyd].”

“Now we can really focus on the getting ready for this really, really long leg ahead of us. Leg five to Brazil is over 12,000 miles, longer than any other leg of the race, so we have a lot to do to ensure we’re as best prepared as possible. The race crew will take some time to rest, so that we’re physically and mentally geared up for the leg ahead, and as a team, we have a lot to do to make sure our boat il mostro is ready for the trip too. This leg will be tough, and will take its toll on all of us, but we’ll be ready for it come Saturday.”

The Volvo Ocean Race is made up of ten legs, finishing in June 2009 in St. Petersburg, Russia. By joining the race, PUMA has entered a new premium category and is the only Sportslifestyle company to participate in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. For more information about the race, team and the PUMA Sailing collections, please visit www.pumaoceanracing.com

Alongside PUMA’s entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, PUMA has launched a full range of marine clothing and apparel, from offshore sailing gear to onshore lifestyle fashion. The PUMA Sailing Performance collection was developed and tested by the PUMA Ocean Racing team itself, and is worn by the team throughout the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. The PUMA Sailing Lifestyle collection takes inspiration from the sport.

Sailing : ERICSSON 4 EXTENDS LEAD IN VOLVO OCEAN RACE

Even in the light and shifty breeze off Qingdao in China today, it was all on for the four Volvo Open 70s as they raced in the third of the in-port race series of the Volvo Ocean Race. Today’s racing was an exciting blend of lead changes and close match racing, with Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael/BRA) finally topping the leaderboard after two races.

After a two-day delay due to lack of wind and poor visibility, race one finally got underway after a short postponement. It was Telefónica Blue (Iker Martinez/ESP/Bouwe Bekking/NED) and Green Dragon (Ian Walker/GBR), both flying jibs, who crossed the start line first with PUMA (Ken Read/USA) and Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael/BRA) setting code zero sails, crossing on port tack - a move that ultimately paid off for Torben Grael, who was the ultimate victor in this race.

At the first mid-course gate, Ericsson 4 had the advantage over Telefónica Blue who, on port tack, had to cross astern of Ericsson 4. PUMA struggled with speed with the code zero and never really recovered from their second row start.

At the first windward mark, it was Ericsson 4 from Telefónica Blue, Green Dragon and PUMA. Telefónica Blue managed to close the gap to the leeward mark, but a slow mark-rounding allowed Ericsson 4 to rebuild her lead.

Ericsson 4 took the lead at the second gate, but a great recovery from Green Dragon changed everything as they challenged Ericsson 4 from their central position in the course, reducing the deficit to just one boat length in the shifting light breeze, a gain of around three minutes.

Meanwhile, Telefónica Blue, with Beijing Olympic silver medallist Iker Martinez in charge, split from the pack and took the left hand option after the gate, a move that initially brought them closer to the pack, but the windshifts did not work in their favour.

At the second windward mark, Green Dragon had gone from a very solid third place to the lead, but immediately after the mark rounding, Ericsson 4 rolled over the top of them and regained the lead.

The race split into two separate match races in the final run to the finish. Ericsson 4 versus Green Dragon for first and second place and, a long way back, PUMA versus Telefónica Blue.

At the final mid-leg gate, Green Dragon held the lead in a slow, but thrilling climax to this in-port race which was in the hands of two of the world’s best match racers, Torben Grael and Ian Walker.

As the wind dropped in the final approach to the mark, Green Dragon gybed, dropped her spinnaker and hoisted a code zero sail, but it was Ericsson 4 who crossed the finish first, 37 seconds ahead.

In third place, PUMA finished 11 seconds ahead of Telefónica Blue, a disappointing position for Bouwe Bekking who, after winning leg four, was hoping to close the gap to overall leader Ericsson 4.

It was all change for race two, where speed off the start line was key on a course that was much shorter than that of race one.

Ericsson 4 pushed PUMA over the line at the start, but it was a great start for Telefónica Blue, and a port tack start for Green Dragon was just what Ian Walker wanted. Ericsson 4 came off the line with better pace than Telefónica Blue who had the stronger position.

At the first gate, Ericsson 4 and Telefónica Blue were in a dead heat, neither boat having the advantage. Green Dragon was a full 37 seconds behind, but in the remaining part of the leg Green Dragon made up lots of ground and crossed ahead of Ericsson 4.

However, at the windward mark, it was all change again as Telefónica Blue had the advantage and rounded first, followed by Green Dragon, with Ericsson 4 putting the pressure on, and PUMA trailing.

On the second beat, Telefónica Blue had nearly a half leg advantage, and after a fourth place in race one, it was critical that Telefónica Blue could finish race two within the time 90-minute time limit in order for her score to count.

On the final beat, Telefónica Blue held on to her lead to win the race comfortably, but, further back, the chasing pack struggled to lay the finish line. Ericsson 4 eventually took second place, which was good enough for a win overall in today’s series, PUMA moved up to third and it was disappointment for Green Dragon who finished fourth after such a good result in the first race. A tiebreak between Green Dragon and PUMA favoured PUMA as the rules required the results from the second race to be used in this situation.

The next race in the in-port series will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 4 April after the finish of leg five (12,300 nautical miles), which starts next Saturday, 14 February.

Cricket : State Twenty20 match moved from Oamaru to Dunedin

The State Twenty20 match between the State Otago Volts and the State Auckland Aces scheduled to be played at Oamaru on Friday 13 February, has been moved to the University Oval, Dunedin.

The late change has been jointly agreed by New Zealand Cricket, Otago Cricket and North Otago Cricket after the NZC Turf manager, Jared Carter, assessed the pitch this morning.

Extreme temperatures over the past three days have drawn all moisture from the pitch and with rain forecast for the next three or four days, there was no way the pitch could have been safely re-hydrated and a quality surface guaranteed.

Otago Cricket CEO, Ross Dykes, said the Twenty20 competition is a premier event and it is essential that all matches be played on the best possible surfaces. “It is extremely unfortunate for North Otago who has worked tirelessly for some months to promote the event and who have had excellent support from the local body and Oamaru businesses,” he said.

“We are mindful of the fact that the Highlanders open their Super 14 season at Carisbrook on Friday evening and to that end, the cricket will start at 4pm to avoid any clash.”

Dykes added that with the Volts leading the Twenty20 competition and the Highlanders ready to launch a new season, it was hoped that the sporting public of Dunedin would get behind both events.

league : New faces to make debut

New recruits Sam Tagataese and Matt White will make their unofficial debuts for the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans in Saturday night’s pre-season trial match against Brisbane at Wynnum’s Kougari Oval.

Former Melbourne Storm forward Tagataese has been named in the second row for the match while Newcastle Knights recruit White will line-up in the starting front row alongside Ian Donnelly.

The pair, who were unveiled in their Jetstar Titans jerseys today, form part of an extended 26-man squad named for the trial match by coach John Cartwright.

The squad also includes former Broncos hooker Ian Lacey and teenage sensation Jordan Rankin.

White, who hails from Inverell, said he was eager to impress at his new club after being thankful for the opportunity to sign with the Jetstar Titans.

“My career was probably on the line (last year) so I know I’ve got to have a big year,’’ said White.

“It should be good, I’m looking forward to the weekend.

“Everything has been good. The boys have all been great, I’ve been getting on well with everyone and I’m loving it up here.

Wellington born Tagataese, who lived with Brisbane’s high-profile new recruit Israel Folau when the pair played together at the Melbourne Storm, said he was looking forward to taking on the Broncos.

“I’m pretty happy and I’m just keen to play. I haven’t played since September so I’m pretty keen to get on the field,’’ said Tagataese.

“I feel a lot stronger than last year.’’

Motoring : Drive The Le Mans Circuit For Yourself

Each June, Motor Racing Legends – organiser of the historic support race at the Le Mans 24 Hours – also runs a Le Mans tour for members of car clubs. Uniquely, the trip includes the rare privilege of driving on the full Le Mans circuit on the Saturday morning of the 24 Hours weekend, before the start of the world’s greatest endurance race.

In the past, the tour has been arranged for a specific marque – in 2008, for example, the Ferrari Owners’ Club was invited to put together a ‘grid’ of its members’ cars, and more than 60 Ferraris – from F40 to 355 Spider, F430 to Challenge Stradale, 328GTB to 550 Maranello – took part.

But 2009 will be different. This June, Motor Racing Legends will run a multi-marque Heritage Parade, accepting applications from classic and modern cars – marques with a traditional link to Le Mans, from Aston Martin and Ferrari, to Jaguar, Bentley, Austin-Healey and many more.

With the roads closed to traffic, it’s an emotional journey: accelerating down the famous Mulsanne Straight, tackling the fast, sweeping Porsche Curves and cruising past the towering grandstands along the pit-straight. To quote just two participants from last year’s trip:

“Having watched the race for years from the other side of the fence, I will never ever forget the experience of heading down the start-finish straight at speed… It was difficult to comprehend that I was actually there.”

“There are very few people who get to drive the full circuit on the weekend of the Le Mans 24 Hours, with all the public roads closed, unless they’re actually racing there. It’s a fantastic experience and a great privilege.”

In addition to the parade laps, drivers can opt for a 4-night, 5-day fully inclusive package of travel and accommodation, or just a circuit and hospitality package. This covers entrance tickets to the Le Mans 24 Hours; reserved, covered grandstand seats; full circuit hospitality in a private facility shared with the Le Mans Legend historic race drivers and teams in the centre of Le Mans circuit, just a stone’s throw from the track… plus a post-parade champagne breakfast, Saturday evening buffet, Sunday barbecue lunch, along with secure and fully guarded circuit parking. Or you can choose just to do the circuit laps. Prices start from £775.

To be an integral part of this exceptional weekend, or for more information and a brochure, contact Lindsey Warren at Motor Racing Legends, on +44 (0)1293 871568, or email lindsey@motorracinglegends.com.
