Tennis : Statham and King-Turner win in first round at Australian Futures Tournament

The first round of the Australian Futures1 grass surface tournament in Mildura started on 9 February with New Zealand players in the singles and doubles.

Rubin Statham’s opponent in the first round of the singles was Aussie Adam Feeney, currently ranked at number 371. Regarding Statham’s ranking at number 417 this was to be a tough match for the Kiwi player.

Statham rose magnificently to the challenge, overcoming Feeney in three sets. The score was 3-6 7-5 6-3

In the doubles Statham and his partner Nima Roshan (AUS) play against Ivo Klec (SVK) and Junn Mitsuhashi (JPN) from China.

Also starting in the doubles will be Statham’s twin brother Oliver. He is playing with Colin Ebelthite (AUS) vs Mao-Xin Gong and Xin-Yuan Yu from China.

Dan King-Turner is facing Australian players in the first round of the singles and the doubles.

In the singles he has defeated Stephen Hoh 6-1 6-1, and in the doubles he and his mate Greg Jones (AUS) have to face Brendan McKenzie and Andrew Thomas.

Statham and King-Turner’s second round singles opponents are yet to be found.
