Rugby : Austin Healey Named As BUCS Ambassador
Former rugby international and star of last year’s Strictly Come Dancing, Austin Healey, was today named as the ambassador for the forthcoming BUCS Championships.
And Healey believes that his career in fact owes a lot to his own student days, when he studied sports science at Leeds Metropolitan.
“My university days were revolved around sport. It was very important to me and I made a lot of good friends in the sporting environment,” said the 35-year-old.
“I used to do gymnastics, table tennis and football, in fact I tried to join as many teams as possible because I wanted to meet a lot of new people. I know that sounds cheesy but it genuinely played a huge role in and around me as a sports person.
“I actually applied to Sheffield before Leeds because both have fantastic sports facilities. When you think about it Yorkshire have these two universities with great facilities, and that’s the reason I knew I had to go to one of them.”
The retired Leicester Tiger and England player will act as both a figurehead and inspiration to the 5500 students who will compete at 14 venues, across Yorkshire, from March 11-15.
Channel 4 will also be at the Championships and they will cover a select number of the 24 sports, which includes everything from athletics, basketball, hockey and netball to rifle, futsal and korfball.
Karen Rothery, Chief Executive of BUCS is in no doubt that this year’s Championships will be bigger and better than the last.
“Sheffield really works for us in terms of its world-class facilities. There’s a huge amount of fabulous venues here, like the EIS, Ponds Forge, the Don Valley Stadium and many others around the city. There’s also been a fantastic legacy left after the World Student Games in 1991 which has allowed fabulous high quality sport to be played.”
