New Zealand rugby fans and players unite to show support for Australian bushfire victims

New Zealand rugby fans and players will be invited to express their sympathy and support for victims of Australia’s tragic bushfires at the three Rebel Sport Super 14 season-opening home matches this weekend.

New Zealand Red Cross volunteers will be at the opening Highlanders - Brumbies match on Friday night at Carisbrook, Dunedin, to accept donations for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. New Zealand Red Cross volunteers will also be at the Crusaders - Chiefs game at AMI Stadium in Christchurch and at the Hurricanes vs Waratahs match at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, on Saturday accepting donations.

A moment’s silence will also be held prior to kick-off at all three matches as a mark of respect to remember the victims and the many people impacted by the fires in Victoria.

New Zealand Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew said with two Australian teams playing in New Zealand on the opening weekend of the Rebel Sport Super 14, it was timely for rugby in New Zealand to show its support.

“This is a human tragedy on an unimaginable scale and everyone involved in rugby in New Zealand wishes to express our sympathy and concern for those who have lost loved ones and provide tangible support for those now needing to rebuild their lives.”

The Blues will be playing their opening match against the Western Force in Perth where collections will also be held for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

New Zealanders can also make donations to the appeal via New Zealand Red Cross by visiting www.redcross.org.nz or by calling 0900 33 200 to make an automatic $20 donation.
