Building on the great interest in the ASB Classic, Heineken Open and the Australian Open tournaments, the Kiwi ‘Summer of Tennis’ is set to continue!
New Zealanders of all ages are being given the opportunity to fall in love with tennis all over again on Valentine’s Day weekend.
More than 150 tennis clubs around the country are participating in the Come Play! Tennis Open Day, on the weekend 14 -15 February.
Everyone who has ever lifted a tennis racquet – or has ever wanted to – is welcome to come along and have a hit.
The tennis clubs will be throwing open their doors, to offer a free and fun tennis experience. There’s no pressure to compete, or send down 200km/hour aces – it’s all about fun!
Spare racquets and balls will be available at the clubs, and everyone is promised time on the court, and a great experience.
The clubs will all be offering ‘follow-up menus’ of tennis activities, tailored to ability, for anyone who would like to take up (or return to -), one of the world’s most widespread and gender-even sports.
The clubs will be providing a special atmosphere for the day.
For example, at Thorndon Tennis Club in Wellington, coach Andy Wheeler will be attempting the break the world record for the highest number of consecutive tennis lessons, starting at 7am on Saturday 14 February, and going through the night! In North Shore City, the Come Play! Open Day is the opening event of an International Festival of Tennis, which goes on to include The North Shore City Beach Tennis Bash! (New Zealand’s first ever Beach Tennis tournament, on Takapuna Beach, Saturday 28 February); the Davis Cup Tie NZ vs Malaysia (6-8 March, Albany Tennis Park) and the first tournament of the ASB Pro Circuit for emerging professional players (7-15 March, Albany Tennis Park). Sixteen North Shore tennis clubs are participating in the Open Day.
The Come Play! Tennis Open Day is a nationwide initiative from Tennis New Zealand, and is being supported by the six regional tennis associations, and a team of tennis Regional Development Managers.

Please note, some clubs will be having their Open Day on Saturday 14 February, and others on Sunday 15 February.
For young children taking up tennis for the first time, further encouragement is offered by Grasshoppers-new tennis for kids, a programme introducing the game to primary school students around New Zealand. Grasshoppers uses modified equipment (smaller courts, nets and racquets, softer balls), and a games-based approach to experiential learning, so everyone is active and having fun at the same time
