Rugby : New Zealand Women’s Sevens trial squad assembles

New Zealand Women’s Sevens coach Darryl Suasua has today announced his 22-women trial squad for the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai.

The trial camp will take place in Rotorua from tomorrow, Friday 6 February, through to Sunday 8 February.

A 17-strong training squad will be announced at the conclusion of the trial, with the squad to be trimmed to a team of 12 for the tournament.

“Many of these players have travelled long distances and made huge sacrifices to make it to the preparation games that have been taking place,” said Suasua.

Eleven of the triallists are members of the Black Ferns, including 2008 New Zealand Women’s Player of the Year Victoria Grant.

“The players are still in the transitioning phase from the 15-a-side game but are making great gains in their sevens specific fitness. This trial is definitely going to be competitive.”

The 2009 Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens takes place in Dubai from 5-7 March.
