Backyard cricket champions’ 2009 L&P Cup campaign underway

• Tough choice facing Brew Bros selectors at player trials
For some, it’s just a bit of fun in the summer sun. But for The Brew Bros, defending
champions of the L&P BYC Tournament cup, backyard cricket is a way of life.
Since winning $3000 and a year’s supply of L&P at the inaugural backyard cricket
Tourney last year, the team has been preparing for the 2009 competition that’s on
again in Paeroa on March 7th in the best way they know how – drinking lots of L&P.
However, the team experienced a major setback in their campaign preparations last
month when one of their five-member winning squad pulled out due to a groin
injury.
The Brew Bros are now holding trials over the coming weeks for their mates who
are keen to fill the coveted remaining spot on their champion team.
“Filling the final spot is going to be a tricky one,” says Brew Bros captain Daniel
Brown. “All our mates want in, but there can only be one.”
“Along with the necessary skills, we'll be looking for how much L&P they can drink
while still bringing their A-game to the pitch, of course.”
In March last year, The Brew Bros beat out 47 other teams in the inaugural L&P
BYC Tourney to take the Cup. More than 250 teams applied for the 48 team slots
that were available.
This year’s event has been extended to 64 teams and will feature additional
competitions and prizes, including BBQs, a lawnmower and meat packs. Teams who
drop out of the main round for the L&P Cup will still be in the running to compete
for the L&P Shield, Plate and Bowl.
Mr Brown says the Brew Bros are not daunted by the prospect of increased
competition at the 2009 Tourney, and welcomes challengers from every part of the
country to come to Paeroa on March 7th to try and beat them.
“We know the competition is going to be more fierce this year, so we’ve been
spending a lot more time strategising and talking about practising while drinking
what's left of the year's supply of cold L&Ps that we won.”
“I'm picking that a passion for backyard cricket and regular refreshment from the
good fellas at L&P will be the winning combination for the team who lifts the
trophy this year.”
Registrations are now open for the L&P BYC 2009 Tourney through the web site
