Tennis : KIWIS THROUGH TO FINAL

New Zealand is through to the final of the Fed Cup Asia Oceania event being played at the State Tennis Centre in Burswood, Perth.

The team, comprising Marina Erakovic, Di Hollands, Kairangi Vano and Shona Lee, continued its unbeaten run with a testing 2/1 win over the otherwise unbeaten Indonesia.

Although a round robin tie, it actually served as a semi-final to see who would go through to the final as both Indonesia and New Zealand had been previously unbeaten in their pool.

After two great wins, out of two singles matches against India and Uzbekistan during the preceding days, Di Hollands put up another tough effort today. She lost 4/6 6/7 to Ayu Damayanti, however played a good match and set the scene for a highly competitive tie. Marina Erakovic, with a win and a loss so far this week, prior to today, then took on Indonesian number one Sandy Gumulya. A commanding straight sets win, 6/2 6/4, set the doubles up as the deciding match to see who would go through to tomorrow’s final.

Erakovic teamed up with Kairangi Vano against Gumulya and Damayanti. The Kiwi pair unbeaten this week, with wins against India and Uzbekistan, carried that confidence to a 6/3 2/6 6/3 victory.

The opponent in the final will be Australia who advanced to the final with a 3/0 victory over Chinese Taipei. The Jelena Dokic, Sam Stosur, Casey Delacqua and Rennae Stubbs outfit has won through to the final with consecutive wins over Korea, Thailand and Chinese Taipei.

The winner of the final tomorrow (Saturday) between New Zealand and Australia will take the Asia/Oceania title and will also advance to the World Group II Play-off.
