Skandia Geelong Week is all but officially wrapped up for another year and it was another resounding success which broke all records. The competition was tight on the water with many of the series results coming down to the wire.
Congratulations to all winners at the event, especially Living Doll winner of the Audi IRC Series Division 1, the last time a Victorian yacht won the overall event was back in 2002 with Lou Abrahams’ Another Challenge.
The media coverage on the event was expansive with newspapers in Spain, TV coverage in Asia, websites in Uruguay plus photographers from the USA and Scotland.
The trophy presentation will be held at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club on Sunday 8th February at 1pm. Series place getters will be notified by email with further details.

Cricket : Injury forces Ryder to return to New Zealand
BLACKCAPS batsman Jesse Ryder will not take any further part in the current Australia tour, and will return to New Zealand today [Monday 2 February]. The shoulder injury which flared up in training last week has not responded sufficiently to treatment, and is continuing to cause restricted movement. Jesse will receive further treatment in New Zealand. Craig Cumming will remain with the tour party.
Reserve wicket keeper Gareth Hopkins will remain with the squad at least until tomorrow [Tuesday]. Team manager Lindsay Crocker said Brendon McCullum came through yesterday’s One Day International well, but his hip flexor injury will be further assessed tomorrow to confirm whether he will continue with full wicketkeeping duties.

Rugby : New Zealand Sevens squad for NZI Sevens named
New Zealand Sevens Coach Gordon Tietjens today named his 12-man squad for the NZI Sevens tournament in Wellington this weekend.
Tietjens named an experienced line-up for the third tournament of the 2008/2009 IRB Sevens Series, with only one potential debutant amongst the group – Save Tokula from Waikato. Bay of Plenty’s Solomon King was not considered for the tournament due to injury.
“This team was one the hardest teams I have ever had to select as the training camps were extremely competitive. Lots of the boys put up there hands for positions and selection proved extremely difficult,” Tietjens said.
The squad will be captained by IRB and New Zealand Sevens Player of the Year DJ Forbes. Forbes has also been named as the New Zealand Sevens squad captain for the remainder of the 2008/2009 IRB World Sevens Series.
New Zealand goes into this tournament in second place behind competition leaders South Africa.
“Wellington is a huge tournament for the team and the boys really want to do the fans proud and bring home the win. We are looking for improvement from our first two tournaments to put the pressure on South Africa who are currently in the lead.”
Following the NZI Sevens, the New Zealand team travel to the USA for the San Diego tournament (14-15 February), the fourth stop in the current IRB Sevens World Series.
2009 New Zealand Sevens squad: Tomasi Cama (Manawatu), Edwin Cocker (Auckland), DJ Forbes (Captain, Counties Manukau), Paul Grant (Otago), Zar Lawrence (Bay of Plenty), Tim Nanai Williams (Counties Manukau), Tim Mikkelson (Waikato), Lote Raikabula (Manawatu), Save Tokula (Waikato), Nafi Tuitavake (North Harbour), Tu Umaga Marshall (Wellington), Viliame Waqaseduadua (North Harbour).

Rugby : All Blacks assess Dan Carter’s injury
All Blacks management are in contact with Dan Carter and will work with his French team on medical options following his Achilles tendon injury in France which has ruled him out of rugby for the foreseeable future.
All Blacks Manager Darren Shand said All Blacks Doctor Deb Robinson and All Blacks Physiotherapist Peter Gallagher had been in touch with Carter and Perpignan officials after the first five-eighths ruptured his Achilles in Perpignan’s match against Stade Francais at the weekend.
“It’s hugely disappointing for Dan. He was really enjoying playing in France. He’s getting fantastic support from the Perpignan team who have been really supportive and keeping us well briefed,” Shand said.
“Dan’s now resting at home in Perpignan and it’s probable that he will need surgery but a full assessment will be made over the next few days.”
Shand said there was no deadline for Carter’s return to rugby.
“As a general rule of thumb, players who suffer a severe Achilles injury are out of rugby for at least six months but it can be longer. Dan will return to rugby when he is ready and we will support him throughout his rehabilitation.”
