Rugby : PUB CHARITY SEVENS TO KICK OFF RUGBY YEAR

The best of New Zealand’s provincial Sevens players will once again be in action when the Pub Charity Rugby Sevens tournament returns to Queenstown in January.

Sixteen teams, including Otago Country, will compete for national honours on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 January at the Queenstown Recreation Ground, home of the Wakatipu Rugby Club.

The other participating teams are 2008 Cup champions and current four-time defending champion Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Canterbury, 2008 Cup finalist Counties Manukau, Hawke’s Bay, Horowhenua Kapiti, 2008 Plate champions Manawatu, North Harbour, Northland, Otago, Southland, Taranaki, Waikato, 2008 Bowl winners Wellington and West Coast.

Next year’s event will be the sixth year in a row that New Zealand’s adventure capital will host the event.

Otago RFU Chief Executive Richard Reid said Sevens rugby remained popular.

“We continue to have fantastic crowds at this event and we will be expecting the same next year. It has proven to be a hit with locals and holidaymakers alike.”

“This event brings together the best provincial sevens players in the county and provides the players an opportunity to be noticed by national coach Gordon Tietjens for New Zealand Sevens selection.”

Sevens with Altitude Chairman Clark Frew is excited by the prospect of another great tournament.

“Each year the tournament has grown in excitement and entertainment both on and off the field. This year will be no different with many new tournament initiatives planned to boost what is already a fantastic event.”

For the first time SKY Sport will show live coverage of every game at the two-day event while fans at the ground will have a unique opportunity to view and have their photo taken with some of New Zealand’s most recognisable sports trophies – the Bledisloe Cup, Tri-Nations trophy, Ranfurly Shield, Rebel Sport Super 14 trophy, and the Air New Zealand Cup.

Entry on each day will be $5.
