Cricket : BLACKCAPS players feature among best of 2008

2008 may have brought mixed fortunes on the park for the BLACKCAPS – but it was a great year for our big hitters and miserly bowlers.

Several BLACKCAPS feature among the top international rankings for batting and bowling during the past year – including Brendon McCullum and James Marshall scoring the two highest individual scores in One Day Internationals, and Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori leading the list for most economical test bowling.

In the test arena, Oram’s economy rate of 1.67 put him well ahead of other bowlers during 2008 – Vettori coming in second with 2.38. Jeetan Patel also made the top list, taking 10th spot with an economy rate of 2.62.

Test match bowling averages saw three BLACKCAPS in the top 10. Oram had the third best average for the year with 20.05, while Iain O’Brien was ranked fifth (21.57) and Vettori eighth (26.12). The New Zealand captain was also the fifth-highest wicket-taker in tests for 2008, taking 54 wickets in 14 matches.

McCullum was the second-ranked wicketkeeper in tests for 2008, with 52 dismissals from 13 matches.

In ODIs, Oram and Patel were among the top 10 for economy rates – Patel in fourth place with 3.34 and Oram ranked fifth on 3.38.

With the bat, Brendon McCullum’s 166 against Ireland in Aberdeen was the highest individual ODI score of the year, closely followed by James Marshall’s 161 in the same match. Jamie How had the fifth highest ODI score of the year with his 139 against England at Napier.

The BLACKCAPS’ 402 for 2 in that match against Ireland was the highest ODI team total of the year. New Zealand also had the ninth-highest total, with 340 for 7 against England at Napier.

McCullum’s big hitting saw him ranked second for the most sixes in ODIs, with 27 from 16 matches. Ross Taylor made number seven on that list, hitting 15 sixes in 16 innings.

The Twenty20 international season saw Jesse Ryder make his mark with the bat in 2008, as one of four BLACKCAPS among the top 10 individual scores in T20I internationals. Ryder’s 62 against the West Indies in Hamilton put him in seventh place, just behind Ross Taylor who scored 63 against the Windies in Auckland. Oram (eighth) and McCullum (10th) also feature in the top T20I scores.

Taylor, McCullum and Ryder take fifth through seventh places in total runs in T20Is, while Taylor and McCullum were third and fifth in the list of most T20I sixes.

New Zealand’s T20 performances against the West Indies at Auckland (191 for 9) and Hamilton (155 for 7) were the third and sixth highest scores for the year.
