Jesse Ryder will remain with the BLACKCAPS team in Australia, with the prospect that he may be fit again in time for the second One Day International against Australia in Melbourne on Friday 6 February.
An MRI scan last night showed no significant injury other than swelling in Ryder's left shoulder joint which was causing pain and restricting movement.
Ryder has received an injection to relieve the swelling and pain. It is expected to take a week for the injury to settle.
BLACKCAPS team manager Lindsay Crocker says a final decision is not expected for a week, but that all going well Ryder should be available for the Melbourne match.
Otago batsman Craig Cumming, who joins the team in Perth on Friday, will remain with the squad at least until Melbourne.
Meanwhile it has been decided that Brendon McCullum will not keep wickets during today's game in Canberra. Crocker says that with further treatment to his hip injury it is hoped he will be able to keep in the first ODI in Perth on Sunday.
Leading Australian under-19 wicketkeeper Ryan Carters will keep in today's game as a substitute. Auckland keeper Gareth Hopkins joins the squad in Perth on Friday in case cover is required.
