Jetstar Gold Coast Titans duo Brad Davis and Esi Tonga today proved to be Heroes with Hearts after spending time with special needs children at the Currumbin Community Special School.

The visit to CCSS was part of the Heroes with Hearts appeal, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for the school which will culminate with a charity gala dinner on Thursday, February 26.

Halfback Davis and rising talent Tonga were only too happy to answer the call from students, donating their time to talk and play with the special needs children at CCSS.

The visit was particularly relevant for Davis, who is a qualified Physical Education teacher and enjoys the chance to get out to schools in between training sessions.

“It’s been great. It’s all about raising awareness for the Heroes with Hearts dinner and trying to get as many people to go in February,’’ said Davis.

“It’s all about having a hero and hopefully their heroes care about them.

“It’s very rewarding, it’s great to come out and spend the day with the kids. They’ve all got smiles on their faces and they’re very enthusiastic.

“Any chance I can get to spend time with the kids I love it and hopefully it’s preparing me for life after footy as well.’’

CCSS caters for about 70 children, ranging in age from 5 through to 18, who either have intellectual or physical disabilities.

CCSS principal Kylie Sargeant said the school was hoping to raise funds in order to enhance facilities for its students.

“The proceeds from the ball will be going to supporting our students and their therapy needs here at Currumbin Community Special School,’’ said Sargeant.

“We provide programs for students with disabilities. To enrol in a special school students need to have an intellectual impairment and some of them have other disabilities as well.

“Physical needs are always challenging for our students and that’s where we are really hoping to raise more funds so we can support those programs for the students.

“The kids are really excited to have the Titans here today. We really appreciate them coming and showing they do have a heart and that they really care for our kids. They’re certainly heroes to us.’’
