Four of Britain’s current and former boxing champions will be warming up the Wembley crowd with a series of races in race-specification Fiat 500s before the stars of world motorsport take to the track at the Race of Champions on Sunday, 14 December.
Frank Bruno, David Haye, Amir Khan and Enzo Maccarinelli have all signed up to race head-to-head in the inaugural ‘ROC Celebrity Race’ over the purpose-built 1km parallel track in Abarth 500 Assetto Corse cars to see who’s Britain’s fastest boxer.
Commonwealth Lightweight Champion, Amir Khan, who fights Oisin Fagan on Saturday at the ExCeL Arena, goes into the contest with a significant advantage over his heavyweight and cruiserweight opponents in the diminutive 930kg, 200bhp race cars, but David Haye, for one is planning stiff opposition.
“I hate losing,” offers the former World Cruiserweight Champion, “if Amir thinks he’s going to get it all his own way, he’d better watch out. He will have a weight advantage but when I’m one on one I will do everything I can to finish first. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Another disparity between the competitors is age, but 47-year-old Bruno is hoping his experience will prove decisive in saving those vital fractions of a second.
“I’m looking forward to giving the young guns a run for their money. Wembley Stadium is where I beat Oliver McCall to become World Heavyweight Champion in 1995 so the place is very special to me. Both Amir and Enzo will be coming there off the back of fights this weekend, whereas I’ll be fresh as a daisy. Bring it on!”
The boxers will make up one half of The ROC Celebrity Race. Four non-boxing celebrities, including James Martin, Shayne Ward and Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna will compete in a parallel knock-out challenge, with the winner of each side of the draw meeting in a grand final.
The ROC Celebrity Race will take place at 1300 before the much-anticipated Chris Hoy and Lewis Hamilton Man v Machine challenge.
