Tennis : SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY/INTERMEDIATE FINALS FIRE THROUGH

With the Semi Finalists decided Annabel Ellis, Gleniti School, was the only seed to fall on day one of the South Island Primary and Intermediate Finals.

Ashburton local, Hazel Redmond, won through her first round of singles with a solid win over Lauryne Ashby, Karoro, 6-2 6-2. Redmond then faced up to girls second seed Sian English, Tahuna Normal intermediate, where she was unable to compete with English’s accuracy in the first set but gamely fought back to take 3 games in the second set off her higher ranked opponent. Redmond will now play in a consolation draw semi final tomorrow against Ilsje Erasmus, Heaton Intermediate.

The Girls Semi finals see top seed Pang Suwanaposse, Merrin, (pictured) play unseeded Georgia Hume, Tahuna Normal Intermediate, Pang has yet to drop a game in this tournament and is the firm favourite to be take out the Girls title. The other semi final is between Sian English, Tahuna Normal Intermediate, and Chezle Phillips, Southbrook, who won a hard hitting battle with Ilsje Erasmus, Heaton Intermediate.

Boys 4th Seed Connor Heap, Cashmere, was pushed in both of his matches by Lawrence Darling, Cannington School, and later in the Quarter final by Kai Lee, Burnside, before he advanced to face the top seed, Elliot Darling, Waihi School, in tomorrow’s semi final. The Other Semi final will be contested by 2nd seed Benjamin Johnston, Medbury, and 3rd Seed Taylor Allan, Northern Southland, who have had straight forward victories in both rounds.
