Tennis : Marcel Vos appointed Fed Cup Captain by Tennis New Zealand

Marcel Vos has been appointed Fed Cup Captain by Tennis New Zealand.

An excellent professional coach and former tour player, Vos brings 25 years of international experience to the role. He has produced national champions in three different continents. For the past 18 years he has travelled, coached and managed WTA, ATP and ITF Tour players, plus world-ranked juniors to all major Grand Slam events. He has coached at all levels of tennis, in different cultures around the world.

Most recently, Vos has been a travelling coach (along with Michiel Schapers) of New Zealand’s top player Marina Erakovic, who is currently ranked 60 in the world in singles, and 43 in doubles. Erakovic was the number one player for the New Zealand Fed Cup team in 2008. Vos has also travelled with and/or coached on the road other Kiwi Fed Cup players Ellen Barry and Sacha Jones. Marcel Vos says, “I am very excited to captain our young Fed Cup team in their goal to qualify for the World Group 2 play-offs in 2009. Having had successful past experiences with all Fed Cup 2008 members, most notably Marina Erakovic, I am looking forward to assembling the 2009 Fed Cup team, bring them together and see them mature further during this campaign.”

Tennis New Zealand CEO Steve Walker says “We are really pleased to have someone of Marcel’s stature and experience in the game to take on the leadership of our Fed Cup team. New Zealand women’s tennis is at the brink of an exciting new phase, and with Marcel’s help, we look forward to ever greater success for our Fed Cup players.

"With an exciting summer of tennis approaching it is great news that Marcel Voss will be joining the Peak Performance team at Tennis New Zealand as Fed Cup captain in 2009, “ says Peter Lumsden, Peak Performance Manager – Women for Tennis New Zealand. “Marcel has had a long history of success working with the very best New Zealand players most recently of course helping, with Michiel Schapers, guide the career of our number one player Marina Erakovic to a career high ranking. I am looking forward to Marcel and I working together over the summer in New Zealand to help shape and prepare the team for our first Fed Cup tie in Perth in the first week of February 2009. Marcel’s experience, enthusiasm and track record of success working with the country’s best female athletes will give our team the best chance of advancing in the Fed Cup events in 2009,” Lumsden says.

The Fed Cup is the world’s premier team competition in women's tennis, launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the International Tennis Federation.

More than 100 nations now compete annually for the Fed Cup.
