Tennis : FUJI XEROX NZMT 2 KICKS OFF

The Fuji Xerox NZMT 2 kicked off today at Scarbro Tennis Centre, Auckland with the qualifying going as expected with all four seeds qualifying. This tournament is the second Configure Express NZMT Circuit Tournament.

Top seed in the qualifying Goran Gerdin (TN) was taken to three sets by Wharenui Hawera (Wkto-Bays) in the first round, and then a tight two set against Hamish Duff before qualifying. Third seed Dima Babenkov had two three set battles before qualifying, meanwhile fellow Aucklander David Cliifford won this two rounds in straight sets. Second seed Ari Davis (TN) won his first round comfortably but was taken to three in his final round against Billy Strachan (AK) before prevailing.

In the girls qualifying, Zhanna Gonzur beat Claudia Williams. Caitlin Molloy and Frances Askew beat Anna Johnston (retired) and Jessica Hughson respectively in their qualifying matches, meanwhile wildcard entrant Julia Moriarty received a bye to get her straight into the main draw.

The main draw was published tonight with top seed again Dan King-Turner and Adam Thompson. Finn Tearney sits at third seed with Wesley Whitehouse at fourth seed. The men's draw has a lot of depth with the 5th-8th seeds being former Davis Cup player Rob Cheyne, wildcard entrant Steven Downs and youngsters James Meredith and Jackson Bodle (pictured).

In the women's, WTA ranked Australian Julia Moriarty is the top seed, with NZMT 1 winner Dianne Hollands coming in at second seed. Former pro player Tracey O'Connor was given a wildcard and slots in at third seed on National Ranking, and fellow Aucklander Abigail Guthrie as fourth seed.

Matches start at 10am tomorrow (Wednesday) with the finals being held on Friday.
