Tennis : Upsets at New Zealand Money Tournament

Kate Parker (Left) and Olivia Isbey started a day of upsets when they beat seeded players Sarah McDermott and Kataraina Hunia respectively in the third round of the Fuji Xerox NZMT 2 at Scarbro Tennis Centre, in Auckland today.

The event is the second in the Configure Express New Zealand Money Tournament Circuit.

Anton Bettink (middle, North Harbour) continued the trend when he tipped out seventh seed Jackson Bodle in the mens third round, taking a thrilling match 6-3 6-7(2) 6-3.

The biggest upset came in the women's quarter-finals when Auckland based junior Tanya Samodelok (right) beat top seed, Australian Julia Moriarty 6-2 6-4.

The match saw a series of long rallies and very close games with Samodelok holding her nerve as Moriarty fought back at the end of the second set.

The other women's quarter-finals were all straightforward with Dianne Hollands, Tracey O'Connor and Abbey Guthrie all winning comfortably.

In the men's singles semifinals the top two seeds, NZ Davis Cup team members Dan King-Turner and Adam Thompson scored convincing wins.

King-Turner ended the excellent run of Anton Bettink 6-2 6-1 displaying too much power and accuracy while Thompson beat Canterbury's James Meredith 6-4 6-3.

The women's semi-finals will be at 10am Friday followed by the men's semis at noon. The women’s final will be at 3pm with the men’s following at 4pm.
