Nicky Jenkins writes: Serious racing boats, cruising boats and trailer yachts will be out on the water at Waikawa Bay in January for Waikawa Boating Club’s Lawson’s Dry Hills New Year Regatta.
The Regatta is a whole lot of fun and last year had entries from as far afield as Christchurch, Nelson and the North Island as well as the regular racing fleet from Waikawa.
Steinlager sponsor the Invitation Race on Friday evening and Lawson’s Dry Hills winery sponsoring the main event on the Saturday and Sunday. There will be six races for the serious racers, plus a cruising race to the outer sounds. Waikawa’s racing fleet regularly sees forty boats competing and sometimes more than fifty so expect some spectacular sights in the bay as boats position themselves for a competitive start. Racing takes place from 9-11 January. Entries close on Friday 2 January but late entries will be taken (at a cost) until the morning of Saturday 10 January.
