Tennis : Dianne Hollands and Rubin Statham win NZ Residentials

Dianne Hollands and Rubin Statham have won the Pascoes the Jewellers NZ Residentials, in association with Configure Express at Albany Tennis Centre.

Hollands continued her dominance of the top domestic tennis tournaments in New Zealand this summer, with her convincing win over young Tanya Samodelok at the NZ Residentials tonight.

Although taking the court with a strapped thigh, Hollands appeared took the match in two sets. The score was 6-2 6-0

In the men's final, the match had a different texture, with Mark Nielsen reveling in front of a supportive North Harbour crowd, and facing New Zealand's number one, and tournament top seed Rubin 'Jose' Statham.

The day before, Nielsen had caused an upset by defeating Daniel King-Turner, while Statham beat Adam Thompson in his semi-final.

Nielsen took a hard-fought first set 7-5. Statham rallied to come back 6-4 in the second.

In the third set, the crowd was treated to more top-class, tightly-matched tennis, with Statham clinching the match 6-4 in the third.

The mood of the night was summarised by a sweat-soaked Nielsen applauding his gritty opponent after the last shot went astray.

The Masters Men's Final was played at the same venue, between Mark Hadley (a Kiwi who has been living in the UK) and top seed Andrew Batie (Auckland), with Hadley winning 3-6 7-6 (5) and 10-5 in the match tie-breaker.
