The quarterfinals had some great encounters today (Sunday) with NZ's top juniors competing at Albany Park Tennis Park.
Sixth seed Barrett Franks (Cant) and third seed Ben McLachlan (Sthn) had a tough battle with McLachlan grabbing the first set. However, Franks came back in the second and won the next two sets 6-3 6-4.
Fifth seed Logan MacKenzie came out strong against fourth seed Riki McLachlan (Sthn) with a 3-0 lead. McLachlan settled his game to fight back and win the first set 6-4. In the second McLachlan dominated and took out the second and match 6-2.
Top seeds Finn Tearney (Wgtn) and Jordan Kelly-Houston (Cant) cruised their quarterfinal encounters against Darnell Sgubin (Akld) and Jamie Eccleton (Akld) both winning in straight.
In the girls quarterfinals number one seed Briar Preston (Nrthn) beat Jenny Blackburne (Cant) 6-4 6-0 to secure her semi-final spot. Imogen Golder did the same against fellow Aucklander Ioana Teu 6-2 6-2.
Unseeded Ashleigh Calder (NB) knocked out third seed yesterday went up against sixth seed Heidi Stewart (Wkto). The first set went to a tiebreak with Stewart triumphing, and then won the second set 6-1.
Northern's Tiffany Wheelock continues her strong performance taking out second seed Sarah Adams (Wkto) in the second round and went on to beat Carli Davis (Nrthn) in her quarterfinal match. Davis put up a great fight winning the first set 7-5, but then Wheelock got the next two sets 6-1 6-2.
Semi-finals kick off at 9am tomorrow (Monday).
