Tennis : Semi-finalists found at NZ Residentials

New Zealand's number one Rubin Statham arrived in NZ to play his first match at the Pascoes the Jewellers NZ Residentials in association with Configure Express at Albany Tennis Park.

Statham beat Canterbury's Barrett Franks 6-4 6-4 to firm a spot in the semi-finals. He will take on fellow Davis Cup member Adam Thompson (Akld) in the semi tomorrow after Thompson took out Wellington's Finn Tearney 6-3 6-3.

Mark Nielsen's (Nthn) experience paid off in end against number three seed Marcus Daniell (Wairarapa) in their quarterfinal match. Although Daniell grabbed the first set 6-1, Nielsen came back to take the next two sets 6-3 6-3. Nielsen now plays second seed Dan King-Turner (Akld) after King-Turner beat James Shortall (Akld) in the other quarterfinal.

In the women's quarters top seed Kairangi Vano (Akld) beat fifth seed Tracey O'Connor (Akld) 7-6 6-2 to advance into the semi's. Vano faces Dianne Hollands (Otgo) who took out junior Abigail Guthrie (Akld) convincingly in the quarters.

Tanya Samedelok (Akld) caused an upset taking out third seed Shona Lee (Akld) 6-1 6-1 and now faces second seed Leanne Baker (Wkto). Baker had a straight set win against Imogen Golder (Akld). Baker and Samedelok played last weekend at the West End Cup NZMT4 with Samedelok coming up trumps.

Men's semi-finals start at 11am tomorrow, with the women's to follow (approx 12.30pm). Doubles quarters (men's) and semis are being held in the afternoon.
