Baseball : YANKEES AGREE TO ONE-YEAR CONTRACTS WITH OUTFIELDERS MELKY CABRERA AND XAVIER NADY

The New York Yankees announced today they have agreed to one-year contracts with outfielders Melky Cabrera and Xavier Nady, avoiding arbitration.

Cabrera, 24, hit .249 (103-for-414) with 12 doubles, eight home runs and 37 RBI in 129 games over two stints with the Yankees in 2008. His 23 outfield assists over the last two seasons (2007-08) were seventh-most in the American League, while his 21 assists as a centerfielder over the same span were second-most in the Majors behind Tampa Bay’s B.J. Upton (27).

Nady, 30, was acquired by the Yankees from Pittsburgh on July 26, 2008, along with left-handed pitcher Damaso Marte in a six-player deal. He batted .305 (169-for-555) with 76 runs, 37 doubles, 25 home runs and 97 RBI in 148 combined games with the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, setting career highs in runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and walks (39). Nady also tied for seventh among all Major League outfielders with 12 assists, tying his career high (also 2003 with San Diego). In 59 games with the Yankees, he hit .268 (61-for-228) with 11 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBI, recording the second-most RBI and tying for the second-most homers on the team from the time of his acquisition through the end of the season.
