Rugby : Dubai Sports City Rugby Academy To Raise Game’s Standards

Academy will Offer Accredited Coaching and High Performance Centre; Spotlight on Dubai Ahead of IRB Rugby Sevens World Cup

ubai Sports City’s Rugby Academy will improve the game’s standards by providing a ‘player development pathway’ for participants, from national teams to grassroots players, meaning players can fully expect to grow within the sport, in addition to benefiting from its recreational value.
News of the academy opening in September 2009 comes as the International Rugby Board (IRB) prepares to stage its Rugby Sevens World Cup in the Emirate in early March of this year.

Designed to offer rugby activities and local leagues in a unique integrated environment, with courses delivered by accredited coaches, Dubai Sports City Rugby Academy will meet the demand of the growing number of rugby enthusiasts in the region.

In addition, the Dubai Sports City Rugby Academy will feature a high performance centre, catering to sports-related player recovery and rehab, providing experienced physiotherapists and coaches with access to the latest sports-specific technology available in the Middle East.

“Dubai is fast-becoming an international rugby hub, and the sport is now one of the highest participation sports in the region,” said Jeff O’Brien, Academies Manager, Dubai Sports City. “The Dubai Sports City Rugby Academy will build on this excitement by providing accredited programs and leagues for participants of all ages, skill levels, and ethnicities, in a professionally managed environment.”

In addition to the sport playing activities, The Dubai Sports City Rugby Academy, through its accreditation partner, will also offer coaching and refereeing education for parents and motivated volunteers to become accredited coaches and referees at their respective clubs or local leagues.

The Dubai Sports City Rugby Academy is housed within the academies campus, which includes the Dubai Sports City Football Academy, the home of Manchester United Soccer Schools, Dubai; a David Lloyd Tennis Academy; a Butch Harmon School of Golf, the first such facility outside the United States; the International Cricket Council’s own ICC Global Cricket Academy; the WorldHockey Academy, a first of its kind partnership with the International Hockey Federation; a Swimming Academy based around a 50 metre swimming pool with a retractable boom allowing simultaneous use by multiple users; a high performance gymnasium; and a world-renowned sports medicine and rehabilitation centre.
