Tennis : Marina Erakovic loses tight second round singles at Australian Open

New Zealand's number one tennis player, Marina Erakovic exited the Australian Open singles in the second round this evening - after a tough match with 2007 quarter-finalist Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

Erakovic showed her ability to foot it with top players, taking Safarova to a scoreline of 6-1 3-6 9-7. Safarova has been ranked as high as 22 in the world.

Erakovic will still be competing in the women's doubles at the Australian Open, teamed with Jelena Costanic Tosic of Croatia.

Last year they combined successfully, reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open.

In their first round doubles match at the Australian Open 2009, scheduled for Thursday (second match on court 13), they will face Safarova and Galina Voskoboeva of Kazahkstan.
