Rugby fans will be given a unique opportunity to see a different side to Shane Williams in a special documentary film following the famous Ospreys and Wales winger.
Shane, broadcast on S4C on Tuesday, 3 February, to coincide with the Channel’s Six Nations coverage, will cap a successful year for the star from Glanamman, near Ammanford.
The Welsh wizard was a key member of the 2008 Grand Slam-winning squad and also won the IRB Player of the Year title, beating other major names such as Ryan Jones, Sergio Parisse, Mike Blair and Dan Carter.
“2008 has been an amazing year for me,” says Shane. “I’ve won awards as an individual and as a team player. I’ve been very fortunate to play with two great teams, the Ospreys and of course Wales – two very successful squads.
“Winning the Grand Slam was one of my highlights because the team came together and played great rugby. Winning the Player of the Year was an added bonus on top of a successful season.”
Shane, who lives in Betws, near Ammanford with his wife, Gail and two year-old daughter, Georgie, talks candidly about the season. He also provides unique analysis of five of his most successful moments of 2008, as he re-creates tries against Scotland, Ireland, Italy, France and world champions, South Africa on the field where he played as a youngster, Amman Utd.
Grand Slam hero Shane takes a trip down memory lane as he visits his old comprehensive school, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, in Ammanford, where he comes face-to-face with former teachers as well as the school’s new generation of gymnasts – a sport at which Shane himself excelled as a teenager.
The programme will also feature exclusive interviews with international rugby stars and rugby commentators Gareth Edwards, Gerald Davies, Ieuan Evans, Robert Jones, Huw Llywelyn Davies and Gwyn Jones.
And with the Six Nations Championship around the corner, Shane and the squad will be looking to replicate last year’s success.
“The pressure’s on – there’s no doubt about it. But we’ve been in this situation before and we have to focus on these games, keep our heads together and play rugby the way that we can,” he adds.
