League : Patison joins Titans coaching staff

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have secured a significant off-field coup for 2009, with highly regarded Palm Beach Currumbin coach Rod Patison joining the club’s coaching staff.

Patison, who has coached the game for more than 20 years through renowned rugby league nursery Palm Beach Currumbin High School, will join the club’s ranks as a coaching co-ordinator.

The new role will see Patison act a link between the club’s senior NRL and NYC sides and the lower grades, Harold Matthews (under-16s) and SG Ball (under-18s).

Jetstar Titans coach John Cartwright said Patison would be a valuable addition to the club’s coaching staff, particularly given his role will see him work with players right throughout the Titans Pathways Program.

“It’s a really good fit for us. Rod is the head coach down at Palm Beach Currumbin and the majority of our scholarship kids go to school down there so he has an influence on them already,’’ said Cartwright.

“We just thought that now we’ve got four sides, we probably need a conduit between our under-16s and our under-18s so that they are doing similar things that we’re doing in the first grade and the under-20s and Rod is the ideal guy.

“They don’t come any better credentialed, he’s a really good person, he’s taught down there at Palm Beach Currumbin for well over 20 years and you couldn’t find anyone that would have a bad word to say about Rod.’’

Patison said he was excited to commence a more formal role with the Jetstar Titans and to be able to work closely with local juniors even after they leave Palm Beach Currumbin High School.

“Basically I’m going to be a link coach where we link the ideas from the senior grades back to the under-18s and under-16s,’’ said Patison.

“In order to do that I’ll be doing some work with the under-20s and first grade and doing some work also with some individuals on some of the basics of the game.

“It’s basically to provide a cleaner pathway from under-16s through to first grade.

“I think it’ll really tidy things up because we’ve got a lot of the kids from school and a lot of our ex-Palm Beach Currumbin kids are here as well.

“I’ll look forward to being able to make a contribution.’’
