WHITE FERNS BEAT WORLD CHAMPIONS in Sydney.

The White Ferns defeated Australia by 13 runs in their ICC WOMEN'S WORLD CUP opening match today.

The match was weather affected mid way through Australia's reply after they had inserted The White Ferns.

New Zealand scored 205 after they were bowled out from 48 overs.

Skipper Haidee Tiffen led the scoring with 57 from 113 balls, Suzie Bates 29, Sarah McGlashan 29, Amy Satterthwaite 38 all got starts.

Australia were 132/6 off 33 overs when the rain descended on the North Sydney Oval and the players didn't return.

The Duckworth/Lewis system was used to declare the Kiwi women the victors by 13 runs.

Kate Pulford 3/32 off 7 and Sophie Devine 2/19 off 7, both right arm medium /fast bowlers were the most successful bowlers for The White Ferns, with Devine going for less than three an over.

Player of the match was White Fern, Kate Pulford.

White Fern coach , Gary Stead said this was a very important match to win and he is absolutely thrilled to get the two points but he said there are three areas his side must tidy up fbefore their remaining world cup matches.

He said the lower order batting was very disapointing after they had an excellent platform set for them by the top five.

The catching was very average generally and the fact they bowled ten wides and two no balls gave their opposition something extra to work with.

He said he was pleased with the top order batting and the aggressive bowling and how they TOOK on Australia.

The White Ferns are in Group A action again on Tuesday, up against The West Indies.
