Sara Campbell comes to London to launch her quest to be the first woman to dive to sub 100m on one breath
March 2009, London: Mighty Mouse, Sara Campbell, the 36-year-old Briton, who shocked the world by setting three World Records within 48 hours, just nine months after starting the extreme sport of freediving, has announced her quest to become the first woman ever to dive to sub100m on just one breath.
After a stunning year in 2007, Sara claimed three World Records and became World Champion, only to experience an enforced break in training and record-breaking with her mother’s death in May 2008. But, now back with remarkable goals, Sara has been training hard in Egypt to prove to the world that she really is the top female in this amazing sport of breathhold diving.
Sara said: “It’s impossible to train without 100 percent mental focus and last year that just wasn’t possible. I had to sit by and watch as my World Records were taken from me, but I am determined to be the first woman to dive to sub100m in Constant Weight. I know I can do it, it’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’.”
Sara will be making her record attempts at this year’s Vertical Blue competition from 1st April on Bahamas’ Long Island. The freediving world will be, quite literally, holding their breath to see if Sara can repeat her amazing feats of 2007.
Sara’s main focus in training now is to increase the speed of her dives. Her World Record in Constant Weight to sub 90m took her a massive three minutes and 46 seconds – about 45 seconds slower than most men complete the same depth! With a new fin, and new focus, however, Sara feels confident that she is in great shape to really make her mark on the face of freediving.
Sara said: “So far my training dives have all been positive. I still have some way to go, but know I have time and it’s a matter of keeping everything in perspective and taking enough rest. Most athletes go into a panic cycle close to competition, over-training and therefore decreasing their performances. No matter how behind I am in my schedule, I will never compromise on the rest I allow my body between dives – that’s the time my body gets stronger and more flexible for the next one.”
Sara will be keeping the world updated on her thrilling journey via her website – www.sarafreediver.com.
