Number of cricket teams from the Philippines doubles, ICC Regional Development Officer to visit

Sixteen teams from 8 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including China, Korea and the Philippines, will compete at the 2nd annual Etihad Airways Philippine International Cricket Sixes being held at Clark Field this weekend (21-22 February).

The tournament, which contributes to the development of cricket in the Philippines, is co-organised by the Nomad Sports Club and the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST).

"It's a marvellous turnout from teams around the APAC region, especially in these difficult economic times," said ACST Chairman Michael Maher.

"The first Philippine Sixes last year really was exceptional and the word is definitely out on the ACST circuit that the Philippines is a fantastic place to tour and play cricket," Mr Maher continued.

Chairman of Philippines Cricket, William Bailey said, "We're delighted with the response in only the second year of the Philippine Sixes."

"We're also very pleased to welcome Etihad Airways as headline sponsors of the tournament, they are fantastic partners for the event," continued Mr Bailey.

The Philippine Sixes has delivered a boost to cricket in the country with the number of sides from the Philippines entering the tournament doubling from three in 2008 to six this year.

"The Philippines Sixes provides an excellent platform to help drive the development of the cricket in the country," said Mr Bailey. "It's very encouraging to see new teams being created in the Philippines and entering the tournament."

With such thoughts in mind, International Cricket Council Regional Development Officer for the East Asia Pacific region Mr Charlie Burke was invited to see, and will attend, the Philippine Sixes for the first time.
