Seeded Marina Erakovic succeeds in Memphis

The first round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & Cellular South Cup in Memphis USA is underway, with Marina Erakovic playing in the singles and doubles main draw.

In the singles Erakovic is the number five seed. Top seed is Caroline Wozniaki of Denmark, who also competed in the ASB Classic in Auckland in January.

Erakovic’s opponent in the first round was Julie Ditty from the USA. Last time they played each other was in 2007 when Ditty beat Erakovic in three sets.

As Erakovic did well in last year’s tournaments she moved up in the rankings to currently be placed at number 56, whereas Ditty is now ranked at 107.

In today’s game Erakovic used her serve to defeat Ditty 7-6 6-0 and so advance to the second round of the WTA tournament.

Her next opponent will be either qualifier Melanie Oudin, ranked 147, or another American Jill Craybas (an occasional doubles partner for Erakovic), ranked 93rd.

Also in the doubles Erakovic and her mate Lucie Safarova (CZE) are seeded at number three. In the first round they will play against Maria Kondratieva (RUS) and Sophie Lefevre (FRA).
