New BLACKCAPS Team Manager appointed

New Zealand Cricket today announced the appointment of Dave Currie as BLACKCAPS team manager. Currie, who was Chef de Mission with the New Zealand Olympic team in Beijing, will take over the role before the start of the National Bank Series against India later this month.


NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said he was delighted to welcome a manager of Currie’s experience and quality to this key support and logistics role.

“Dave has a great track record of success and will bring proven leadership and an ability to create an environment where high-performing teams and athletes can thrive,” said Vaughan.

“Dave has a real passion for cricket – and we’re looking for him to bring in his expertise and knowledge from outside the game to help us grow and develop our top team.”

Currie has extensive experience working with New Zealand’s elite sportspeople. He was the New Zealand Olympic Committee’s Chef de Mission at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and also headed the teams at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006.

He was head of the Halberg Trust from 1988 to 2005, and race director for the New Zealand Ironman Triathlon for 10 years to 1997. He is Chairman of the Waikato-based WEL Energy Trust and a member of the Waikato District Health Board.

Vaughan said the appointment was for a three-year period, during which time Currie would be released to continue his role with the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) as Chef de Mission to the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Currie will also continue in his role as Chef de Mission for the London 2012 Olympic Games. "Both roles are about managing and inspiring teams to excel," said Currie.

The 2010 Games coincides with the BLACKCAPS’ short tour to Bangladesh, for which a temporary manager would be appointed. This was the only clash that was foreseen, Vaughan said.

Vaughan acknowledged the service provided by outgoing manager Lindsay Crocker. “The BLACKCAPS have been very well supported by Lindsay as team manager, who has made an outstanding contribution over the past five years.”

Currie will join the BLACKCAPS when the squad assembles for the India series on 23 February.
