The Vodafone Junior Warriors made an encouraging start to their preparations for the 2009 National Youth Competition with a seven tries-to-one victory over a Waikato Selection in their trial at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton tonight.
Facing senior opponents, the Vodafone Junior Warriors were largely untroubled in winning the contest despite being locked at 6-6 early in the first half.
The side has lost several players from the line-up that was just seconds away from reaching the inaugural NYC grand final last year.
But tonight’s outing showed off several players with ample potential.
One of them was young halfback-standoff Shaun Johnson from Hibiscus Coast.
He had a hand in each of the side’s first three tries and also kicked his first five conversion attempts before missing one.
Winger Brandon Nixon, another impressive performer, scored two tries.
