King-Turner Into Semi, But Statham Just Falls Short

New Zealand tennis No2 Dan King-Turner has won his way into the semifinals of the US$15,000 ASB Pro Circuit tennis Futures in Wellington with an upset victory over top seed and 193rd ranked Carsten Ball of Australia.

In the windy conditions King-Turner ranked at 459 served and volleyed and charged the net at all opportunities for the 6-2 6-4 win and his second semifinal in consecutive weeks.

“I have a game based around my serve and I like to come forward. My first serve percentage was fairly high. All in all I’m pretty happy. You can’t let the weather affect you,” said King-Turner.

King-Turner broke Ball’s serve in the first game of the match and then again in the fifth game of the set. The second set was game for game until King-Turner managed to break Ball’s big serve in the fifth game to go ahead 5-4 and then serve out the game and the match.

It is King-Turner’s fourth win over a top-200 player.

Rubin Statham almost made the semifinals an all-Kiwi affair but was beaten by third seeded Australian Adam Feeney 6-3 3-6 7-5. Statham never had a substantial lead in his clash, always playing catch-up in the horrendously windy conditions. It was the third week in a row Statham had made the quarterfinals but not progressed any further.

The other men’s semifinal will feature second seed and last week’s finalist Tatsuma Ito of Japan who overcame Artem Sitak 7-5 2-6 6-3 against unseeded Korean Davis Cup player Young-Jun Kim.

Kim beat Italian sixth seed Matteo Viola in straight sets in his quarterfinal match.

The women’s US$10,000 semifinals feature two seeded players and two qualifiers. Top seed I-Hsuan Hwang(Taipei) against Korean So-Jung Kim. Hwang defeated Hamilton winner Ayu-Fani Damayanti in straight sets while Kim beat fellow qualifier Jie Hao(China) in three sets.

South African qualifier, Lizaan Du Plessis has had to come through qualifying at all three events and will face fifth seed Kyung-Yee Chae(Korea) in her semifinal.

Semifinals start at midday at the Renouf Tennis Centre with Du Plessis against Chae first followed by King-Turner and Feeney with Kim and Ito next and Hwang and Kim the final match of the day.
