It’s now one week away from the first Davis Cup tennis tie of the year for the New Zealand team sponsored by Greymouth Petroleum.
New Zealand plays Malaysia in the first round Asia/Oceania Group II clash to be held indoors at the Albany Tennis Park, North Harbour.
The 6-8 March tie will see the Kiwi team of Rubin Statham, Dan King-Turner, GD Jones and Adam Thompson take on a Malaysian team which is short on international experience aside from its top player, 30-year-old, Yew Ming Si.
Si who has been playing Davis Cup since 2002 won all four of his singles matches as his nation was promoted from Asia/Oceania Group III last year. The remainder of the team is Adam Jaya, Razlan Rawi, Abd-Hazli Bin Zainuddin.
The current New Zealand No1 is Statham with an ATP ranking of 416. King-Turner is ranked at 466 and GD Jones has a ranking of 652 with Thompson at 830.
The first day of play on Friday 6 March will commence at 2pm with two singles matches, followed on Saturday 7 March with the doubles from 2pm and the Sunday with the reverse singles starting at 11am.
The winner of the tie will play either Indonesia or Kuwait later in the year with the hope the New Zealand side can work its way back up Asia/Oceania Group I alongside nations such as Australia, India, Japan and Thailand.
The Davis Cup is part of the North Shore City International Festival of Tennis which will feature the ASB Pro Circuit men’s US$15,000 Futures and women’s US$10,000 tournament starting Tuesday 9 March at the Albany Tennis Park.
