Titans launch scholarship with Griffith University

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans and Griffith University have strengthened their existing relationship by announcing a new scholarship designed for students who have overcome challenges to study.

The recipient of the Titans-Griffith scholarship receives $15,000 over the course of a degree to assist with their studies.

Jetstar Titans managing director Michael Searle and Griffith University Vice Chancellor Professor Ian O’Connor today gathered to formally launch the concept and to also announce the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.

The pair were joined by new Titans recruit William Zillman, who has recently enrolled at Griffith University to study a Bachelor of Business (Real Estate & Property Development)

Fittingly, the inaugural recipient of the scholarship was awarded to a Titans fan – 17-year-old Jason White.

Despite facing a number of challenges through his school years, Jason has remained a dedicated student, achieving results that earnt him a place in a Bachelor of Commerce at Griffith.

“The Jetstar Titans are proud to present Jason with the scholarship which will assist with his studies at Griffith University,’’ said Searle.

“The club already has strong links with the university, including a successful work experience program, and this scholarship emphasises our ongoing commitment to the community and education.

“We also have a number of students currently studying at Griffith University and our relationship will be further strengthened through this initiative.’’

Professor O’Connor said the university was delighted to be offering the Titans Scholarship for the first time in 2009.

“Griffith has a strong history of providing opportunities for students who have the potential to attend university but are discouraged by financial and personal restrictions,’’ said Professor O’Connor.

“Our reputation in social equity and inclusion is evident in the criteria for this scholarship.

“Worth $15,000 over the course of a degree, the scholarship offers the recipient the flexibility to choose how the funding will best benefit their studies, recognising the different circumstances of each scholarship holder. Some students may choose to put it towards a HECS debt, while others may use it to pay for much-needed study resources or accommodation if living away from home.

“Jason's dedication to his studies and passion for learning makes him the perfect choice as our inaugural recipient. We are pleased to be able to support his university endeavours through this scholarship and know it will provide welcome financial relief for him as he begins his university career.

“Griffith and the Titans have forged a strong partnership and share a belief in the important role education plays in developing opportunities for individuals while also connecting strong local communities. I look forward to this partnership continuing through future joint initiatives.’’

Jason said the scholarship was a great financial relief and would allow him more time to focus on his studies.

"Knowing I have this money to help me out takes some pressure off, as it will go towards all the resources I need for uni,’’ said Jason.

“Hopefully I'll now be able to work less at my part-time job so I can study more. I'm really grateful for this opportunity that will help me throughout my degree and looking forward to starting at Griffith."
