Salford University students received exclusive hands-on coaching from the Lancashire County Cricket Club players on Thursday 26 February to help celebrate the University’s 12-month sponsorship of the Indoor Cricket Centre at Old Trafford.
The budding cricketers took tips from the first team squad – including vice-captain Luke Sutton, Gary Keedy, Oliver Newby and Kyle Hogg – as part of the University’s higher education partnership with the Club.
After watching the professionals’ regular training session, the student team were treated to a masterclass on bowling and batting techniques.
University cricket club captain, Tom Hughes, said: “It was a real privilege to be given access to some of the best cricketers in the country. We learnt some valuable lessons from the players that we’ll be able to put to good use in our future matches.
“It’s not often that you get such a close-up view of the professionals in action - it was a real eye-opener.”
The professional coaching session was part of a series of partnership activities over the last two years, which have seen the Lancashire team benefit from the University’s high-tech fitness testing, post-injury rehabilitation, and expert exercise and health advice.
Lancashire vice-captain Luke Sutton said: “The club’s relationship with Salford University is more than a sponsorship, it’s a partnership, and it’s fantastic that they are using their association with Lancashire to provide opportunities like this for their students.
“The Lancashire squad have reaped the benefits of using Salford University’s fitness testing facilities over the past two seasons, and hopefully the role of teacher can be reversed through days like this. It’s always a good feeling to pass on your knowledge to others, and everyone seemed to have a great time.”
