England tug of war teams were successful at the UK indoor tug of war championships recently. The event was held in Ballymena in Northern Ireland on Friday 13th February, and England teams were up against teams from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the tug of war equivalent of Rugby's Six Nations.
The event was held in weight categories, the 600 kilos and 680 kilos for men, and the 520 kilos for ladies teams. Each weight category was the combined weight of 8 pullers. The event was kenly contested, and England came away with a good haul of medals.
In the 680 kilos, England 'A' won the gold medal, ahead of Scotland 'A' who won the silver medal, and England 'B' won the bronze medal, with the Northern Ireland 'A' team finishing in 4th position.
Scotland 'A' gained their revenge in the 600 kilos event however, where they beat England 'A in the final, with Scotland 'B' winning the bronze, and Northern Ireland 'A' finishing 4th.
In the ladies event, England 'A' won their second gold medal of the tournament, with Northern Ireland 'A' winning the silver and Scotland 'A' the bronze.
"It was a great weekend for the England Teams" commented England 'A' 600 kilos team member, and Tug of War Association Spokesman Alan Knott. "England have dominated the indoor side of tug of war for a number of years, although in the past five years, England hasn't won the amount of gold medals it has done in the past, so it was nice to come away with 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 1 bronze medal from this event"
"All of the teams train very hard for these events. As an amateur sport, teams train together twice a week, and compete at weekends, and every team member will have their own fitness and diet programme to ensure that they can compete at the highest level, whilst also making it into their respective weight category. Tug of War is a great team sport, there are no individual stars, and everyone works for one another"
The UK indoor championships was the final event of the indoor tug of war season, and teams are now looking forwards to the outdoor tug of war season which starts in April. The Tug of War Association organises event all over England, and more information can be found on the Tug of War Association web site at www.tugofwar.co.uk.
