Cartwright replaces Tim Sheens

The New South Wales Rugby League Board of Directors have today named John Cartwright City Origin coach for the 2009 City Country Origin match to be played at Orange’s Wade Park on Friday May 8.

Cartwright replaces Tim Sheens in the City Origin role following Sheens’ appointment as coach of VB Kangaroos last month. Cartwright has held the assistant coach role of the Kangaroos for the past two seasons.

The former Kangaroo represented the NSW Blues eight times during a distinguished 184 First Grade game career and has enjoyed a steady rise through the coaching ranks since emerging as a First Division coach at Penrith in 2000.

Cartwright has held assistant coaching roles with the Sydney Roosters (2003-05), City Origin (2006) and the NSW Blues (2004) and was appointed coach of the Gold Coast Titans in 2007.

“John has acquitted himself well in a number of assistant coaching roles with our representative teams in the past,” NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said today.

“His elevation to head coach of the City side is testament to the terrific work he has done with our teams and also the success he has had with the Titans.”
