Etihad Airways is being snubbed by the Australian Football League despite being a sponsor of one of the game's premier venues.
Etihad signed a five-year naming rights deal with the owners of the Telstra Dome
in Melbourne last year. The venue was rebranded from Telstra Dome to Etihad Stadium on March 1, but the AFL has refused to acknowledge the change because Qantas is a major sponsor of the competition. It still refers to the venue as the Telstra Dome.
The AFL has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, claiming it needs to see the
contract between stadium management and Etihad before deciding whether or not to sue for breach of contract.
Chief Justice Marilyn Warren has reserved judgement on the matter.
Almost 50 games will be held at the venue this season. It is the home ground for five
teams – Carlton, St Kilda, Essendon, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. Ironically, Qantas and Etihad last week signed a codeshare agreement.
