Junior Titans sitting pretty after fourth straight win

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans’ new-look Harold Matthews (under-16s) side has rocketed to third position on the ladder after notching its fourth straight win on Saturday.

The competition newcomers continued their blistering start to their debut season in the Harold Matthews league with a dominant 40-16 win over Penrith at Boyd St Oval, Tugun.

The win was significant given it marked the side’s fourth victory in five matches and came against Penrith – a renowned junior rugby league nursery.

Titans’ Harold Matthews coach Aaron Zimmerle was ecstatic after the victory and said the win was a reflection of what a well-drilled side could achieve if they stuck to their game plan for the full 60 minutes.

“We knew that this game was going to be a physical challenge for us and its all credit to the boys for taking on and overcoming that challenge,’’ said Zimmerle.

“Winning the second half 22-0 was an indication that we didn’t fall away in the latter stages of the game and a real confidence boost for them.

“It showed that through sticking to our plan and executing it for the entirety of the game and working as a team, we could overcome a bigger side who seemed to rely on the individual performances of a couple of their players.

“At half-time we decided we were not going to be beaten by a one man team. The players really stood up today and Lloyd Perret deserves a special mention in his debut against some much older footballers.’’

The Titans’ SG Ball (under-18s) side remains in fourth spot on the ladder despite suffering a 28-14 loss to Penrith on Saturday.

The Titans led 14-4 shortly after halftime but three swift Penrith tries in a 10 minute period turned the game in favour of the visitors.

The SG Ball squad now faces Newtown at Henson Park next week while the Harold Matthews team is up against the Roosters at the same venue.

The Titans’ next home game is against Illawarra at Betty Diamond Oval (March 28-29).
