South Sydney’s stunning start to the 2009 Telstra Premiership has propelled them to the top of the inaugural NRL Club Championship unveiled today.
The Rabbitohs’ biggest win in 29 years, combined with their convincing Toyota Cup victory over the Sydney Roosters, has lifted them to the top of a competition that gives Rugby League fans a new way to measure the strength of their club.
The NRL Club Championship is a combined points table for the NRL and Toyota Cup with each competition given equal weighting.
Under the system, each club will be awarded two points for a win and for a bye, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss for each NRL and Toyota Cup match.
“More and more fans are becoming club members and the NRL Club Championship highlights the importance our members and our clubs place on achieving success in both the NRL and Toyota Cup,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.
“It is a great way for fans to gauge the overall strength of their club and it reflects the important status the Toyota Cup has in our game.”
Round 2 of the Telstra Premiership and Toyota Cup kicks off on Friday night with the Rabbitohs hosting the Eels at ANZ Stadium and the Broncos tackling the Storm at Suncorp Stadium.
On Saturday, the Dragons play the Titans in Wollongong, the Panthers face the Bulldogs at Penrith and the Cowboys clash with Wests Tigers in Townsville.
On Sunday, the Raiders host the Roosters in Canberra and Premiers Manly host the Warriors at Brookvale Oval while, on Monday night, the Sharks tackle the Knights at Toyota Stadium.
