The Great Ocean Road, one of the world’s most spectacular costal drives, will be the backdrop for an adventurous distance running festival on 16 and 17 May 2009.
The 2009 Great Ocean Road International Marathon will see participants running 6.5km, 14km, 25km or a challenging 45km of the snaky 300km (about 185 miles) iconic road, whilst enjoying a breathtaking array of natural treasures along the water edge.
Open to runners and walkers of all abilities, this year’s marathon promises to be the best ever, with entries up more than 50 percent from the same time last year.
Boasting the world famous Twelve Apostles rock formations, the Great Ocean Road is Australia’s most impressive stretches of road and has also been voted Victorians’ top tourism experience in their state, thanks to the picturesque ocean beaches, rainforests and mountains on its edges.
The iconic road can also be enjoyed by hikers on the Great Ocean Walk, a 91km step-on, step-off track featuring pristine rivers, a lake-filled volcano crater, national parks and reserves. bothfeet’s exclusive Walking Lodge, the only of its kind in Australia, just opened its doors behind the picturesque Johanna Beach, set in a natural rainforest amphitheatre on the midpoint of the Great Ocean Road.
Launched in 2005 and offering more than AU$40,000 (nearly £19,000) in prize money, trophies and random awards, the Great Ocean Road Marathon is designed to be a tourism drawcard for the region.
